Should I swap my mobo with P5B Deluxe wifi

The motherboard was inside a case which was found in a rubbish tip. There was a cheap brand PSU in the case and a E6600 in the board.

I have tested the motherboard and it boots to the bios easy. I can't test it any further as I don't have a spare HDD lying around that works. From what I can tell the board itself looks to be in good conditions minus the tiny rust spot nears the ports which is from dust buildup in the case.

I'm not too keen on reinstalling my OS but I will reinstalled it if people think it's worth it to see if it works correctly. So what does everyone think should I swap my motherboard out with this board and see if it's running properly?

There are 2 reason that are pushing me to swap 1. Being I could OC with the board since my board I have can't OC at all. 2. It has 4 dimm slots and is capable of having 8gb of ram where as mine only has 2 dimm slots and is only capable of using 4gb ram max.

You could try two things before swapping, I would definitely try.

First of things, download an Ubuntu Live CD and boot from it on that board to see if it works at all, or if all works well; the boot is long from a CD, but it does work, all drivers are installed and you can test if the board runs fine. Then you could safeguard by creating a "restore point" on your current build, or even a backup HDD image. Then try to swap boards, but save all your important files on an external hdd/cd/dvd just to be sure.

There you go, post back how it worked out.

Ok I'll give it a go with ubuntu live even though I've never used that before and if all goes well I'll backup my os onto one of my hdds and swap the boards out and reinstall. I'll have to do this tomorrow even though I reallllyyy want to try it out now but it's late.

I tested it out this morning and it seems there are 2 problems 1. being every time it's unplugged from power it loses all bios settings and says Cmos Settings wrong overclocking failed! and 2. every time I turn it on it turns on for 2 seconds then turns off then turns on properly.

But it does work fine in Ubuntu after it starts properly. I have tried to take the battery out and put it back in again but that didn't fix the cmos problem. I even tried replacing the battery but that did nothing too.

The CMOS battery is dead, just get a new one.

Yea I found that out after I changed the battery. Everything works now so I'm gonna swap the boards out after I finish backing up everything.

Ok it's installed and working perfectly. I wasn't sure about weather what to use with ram but since I had two 2gb kits lying around I installed them instead of my 1x 2gb stick of Kingston hyperx ram. Only thing is both kits have different timings and the Samsung ram is 667mhz where as the Kingston is 800mhz but I guess I can alter the settings in the bios now and make them the same.

I've already started overclocking a bit but haven't tried pushing it yet cause I need to learn a bit more.

Edit: Though I must say the onboard audio absolutely sucks, I get crackling at times and everything sounds more tinny then my old motherboards audio but I found out that was normal with this board. at least I can get a pci-e sound card now since my 4870 was covering the slot on my old board.
