980x vs 990x

Thread Starter
So in the next few months I may be in the market for a hex core. I know Sandy bridge-e is coming out somewhat soon, but I will wait a year or so before upgrading to that to ensure the platform is entirely stable. Anyway, while looking at the stats for the 2 chips, the only difference I can see is that the default CPU mult is lower, resulting in a lower base clock speed, as compared to that of the 990x. Is there something else that maybe I'm missing? It will be under water, and it will be overclocked in my sig rig. Thanks!

Nope, thats the only difference. Many people will say it has a better IMC but I don't think that really justifies its increased price tag.

Especially if I'm not overclocking the memory. I just need the mem to run at rated speeds...the unlocked multi should take care of the rest smile.gif

990x is released a year after 980x, so my guess is that it will have better fab and most likely higher binned than the 980x hence the price tag...

a lot of 930s clock better than 950, same story...

As mentioned, the 990X usually has a stronger IMC than the 980X. On average they also tend to clock higher on air.

I've had the 980x and now the 990x and I can tell you that the 980x topped out @ about 4.5GHz with 1.456v while my new 990x tops out @ 4.7GHz stable with about the same voltage.

The IMC is pretty identical on both chips, on mine anyway.

The 990x runs a little bit cooler than my old chip too. I think chances are better that you'd get a good 990x compared to a 980x. It depends on the cpu you get if won the overclocking lottery or not.

The 980x and 990x both have the same stepping. (B1)
Any improvements to overclocking headroom with the 990x are likely attributed to a more mature manufacturing process.

I was kinda almost set on the 980x, but after seeing the clocking differences between the 2, I may shell out the extra for the 990x. It's still a few months down the road, but...we'll see. Thanks for the feedback, +rep
