Is the marvel controller poor for ssd speeds on x58?

I was looking to change things around alittle in my current i7 system. My board is old and faulty now the gigabyte UD3R.

I want to upgrade to the Asus P6X58D-E

However i have heard that with sata 3 SSD like the crucial M4 my speeds will be bad due to the controller.

Is this true?

It is true to some extent. The main problem of the Marvell controller is that it does not support TRIM, which can be a problem or not depending on your drive. If you own an SSD based on the Sandforce Controllers (and none other) and you leave some spare space the performance of the drive on the Marvell controller can be decent. Without TRIM performance degrades over time, but Sandforce-powered drives are more resilient and more free space leaves room for idle garbage collection.

Bottom line: I wouldn't have any problem using something like a Vertex 3 on a Marvell X58 SATA3 port, but it may not work @100%. When you'll upgrade to sk2011/IB (couch*Bulldozer) you'll see a performance boost from the SSD, too.
