Want a new card, is my cpu a bottleneck?

Thread Starter
My cpu is an AMD phenom II X4 965 BE and right now my video card is a 5770. I was thinking about getting a 6970 or 580, but am afraid of it being a bottleneck. If it is, what video card should I get without having to worry about a bottleneck, a 5870?
Edit: Should probably mention that I haven't overclocked the cpu.

Your 965 BE? You shouldn't have a bottleneck I'd think.

A 5ghz 2500k will squeeze more fps out of a gtx580 than you'll get with your cpu, so yes, there is a bottleneck. However, will it work great together and will you see an improvement? Yes. Btw, I used my GTX580 with a 955 while my 2500k was in the mail and it worked great.

Overclock the CPU when you get 580 or 6970.

You will definitely see a performance increase, but a 6970 will probably a bottle neck on that CPU. If you can get your 965 to 4.0 do so if its the 125TDP revision shouldn't be to hard. My good friend has a 965 the 140w and it wont got a touch over 3.8 and he just recently replaced his 4870 with a unlocked 6950. His performance in games ha almost doubled in most games but I am almost certain he would gain from a higher clock so is GPU wouldn't bottleneck so much. Bottom line is it worth it to upgrade yes now depending on how much your gonna spend I would probably recommend just picking up a 6950 and saving your self some money.

A 965 will definitely bottleneck a 6970 or a 580 by a fair margin, specially on stock clocks, you'll still notice quite a bump in performance though.

don't worry about bottleneck in your case, yes there will be a bottleneck, but that will ultimately mean that you won't be getting 200 frames per second but 180 fps for example
nothing you need to worry about
only thing you would experience bottleneck is highly cpu intensive games like strategy games with pretty high number of units

but, really, don't worry about that, you got a great cpu, and you most probably won't ever notice a bottleneck

and there isn't much of a choice if you wanted better cpu, because that is one of top amd, and for some small improvement, you would have to get one of top intel offerings, and that would cost way too much

so feel free to get yourself a nice gpu
