Hey guys! So I'm currently building a NAS for my house and I was thinking of running FreeNAS but I have some questions about how well it runs. My hardware will be a dual-core Atom processor with 4 gigs of RAM. The goal is to have all my files backed up (both Mac and Windows), also stream movies from my NAS to HTPC (full 1080p). Is anyone doing this right now? Can someone give me some advice before setting everything up?

I had one setup virtually to do filesharing, I ditched it eventually and just setup a samba file server with CentOS. It works great as a fileserver, but if you want to add more powerful services and features you might be better off going with a linux setup. The beauty of FreeNas is it's small, you could literally install it onto a 100meg flash card and dedicate 100% of your HD space for the files.

Currently using FreeNAS with streaming. I started with FreeNAS 8, which in my opinion is complete trash for home users. It has almost none of the features that its previous version has, such as bit torrent and DLNA streaming support. So I ended up using the older FreeNAS 7 and it works well enough. The problem is it takes tweaking and some knowledge of BSD/linux to set it up the way you want. I installed PS3MediaServer on it, and after some configuration it works for just about everything except live transcoding of mp4/mkv files.

Overall I do like it though compared to my previous media solution which was Fedora/Amahi running miniDLNA to the PS3.

I ditched FreeNAS after 8.0 came out. They removed a lot of the things between 7 and 8 that I used.

I've switched to Amahi. I've only had it up for a few days, and only had an hour or two to mess with it, but it seems to be great so far. The initial install gave me a few fits, but eventually I figured it out so that it saw my RAID5. Amahi also has a VPN server built into it. Just open up a port on your router and download their VPN software, and it's done.

I also thought the webGUI was better put together.

EDIT: At this point I have not tried to use it as a way to stream media.

Hmm...sounds like FreeNAS isn't a keeper, any alternatives? I will give Amahi a try too.

I love FreeNAS. I use it on my 15TB NAS which is ran off of a Pentium E5300 w/8 gigs of ram. Unlike the other responses, I like the fact that FreeNAS 8 separated the NAS part and pulled the other functionality. I personally have a VMWare ESXi server that I run multiple VM's on for that other functionality among other things. FreeNAS does plan on adding an addon system for 8.1 which would bring back a lot of lost functionality that was in version 7. This will allow people like me to not have that unneeded stuff installed, but give the option to the people who do want it.

For an alternative try Open Filer.

I was waiting for FreeNAS to add iSCSI/ZRAID to the web GUI.

8.1 just went RTM but I haven't tried it yet. I really wanted to try iSCSI/ZFS-based RAID so I am going to have to try it soon here.
