New server, what to look for?

post #1 of 7

Small-ish company I work for is putting down the mouse in the wheel finally and we are upgrading.
Running mostly W7 computers off of the server which has been a little painful tbh.
Anyway, upgrade time. What should I be looking for in an upgrade.

Want good compatability, speed , reliability. There will be maintenance with it etc so I am just involved in what we should get.

Citrix has been mentioned, not sure about cloud myself.

Some user's experiences would be greatly appreciated.

As parityboy asked, the number of clients and applications they use is very important.

Now what are you using now? Windows Terminal Services?

Hi guys,about 15 clients for local server. Windows server 2007, xp based? I believe it is. Not much data, spreadsheets, docs for the most part. Currently mabye about 4tb of storage in total. Half of which is barely used.
Also some drives used much more than others, like finance etc.

@OP

So basically your server machine is really a file server? Do you host any server applications (like a database or something)?

I just picked up a used server for work. proliant G5 DL380. 2x 4core @ 2.5GHz (core2 arch), 12GB ram, 8x 73GB SAS 10k in raid 6 (400GB useable),and redundant hotswap PSUs, for $1.5k shipped.

hard to beat that for a typical "low end" server's dayjob. Unless you're running a lot of VMs, I can't see it not having enough horsepower.
