Leave Windows Phone 7 for Android?

I currently have a Samsung Focus running WP7.5 Mango. Quite honestly, I am not impressed. I have had it since February and it just hasn't gotten any better for me. I think the OS has a lot of potential but it is progressing very slowly for me to really want to wait around. Some days I actually miss my iPhone. Another deal breaker for me is my work's email server cannot connect to my phone. Another coworker sat on tech support for days trying to figure this out before they just returned the phone. Something with our certificate, WP7 doesn't like. Oh and the keyboard, garbage. I can't stand it. Typing on my wife's iPhone is sooo much nicer.

An upgrade just came up on my account. Currently I can get an Atrix 4G for free (I am on AT&T and will be for quite some time thanks to my wife), or I can get a Nexus S or Atrix 2 for $50. $50 is my max price range for now until probably February, thanks to needing to save for X-Mas gifts and some medical bills that need to get paid off. As much as I would love a Galaxy S2, It just isn't in the cards right now so don't suggest it.

The reason I went with WP7 in the first place was I was tired of iOS (I realize now most of it was due to the terrible hardware in the 3G) and I didn't like the feel of Android. At the time 2.1 was just released and it all just seemed like it was bulky and not smooth. It just really turned me off at the time. Recently though I played around with a Evo 3D at the sprint store and I really liked it a lot. It didn't remind me of all the things I didn't like about Android from back in the day.

Now I would prefer to just get the free Atrix since well it's free. biggrin.gif but am I just going to regret it later on? I am not one of those gotta have the very best phone types. I just want one that functions well (Which I have yet to find going from Windows Mobile to iPhone 3G to WP7) and does what I want without making me annoyed and want to break it.

So if you had to choose right now, What would you get? And Why?
-Stay with the Focus
-Motorola Atrix 4G $0
-Motorola Atrix 2 $50
-Nexus S $50

What mail server does your work use? If it is Exchange, then your IT department needs to get something sorted out on their end. Their are some know issues with Exchange 2003 that they are looking into, but nothing that would make your phone not connect at all.

Personally, I like WP7, so I am biased. I have used iOS 1-4, Android 1.6-2.3, and pre-Mango WP7. I think they all have strengths and weaknesses and really it just comes down to personal taste. I find it funny that you mention that you don't like the soft keyboard, since I thought that was one of the strengths of WP7. But I'll try to save you some time and help you pick a phone that YOU like, not just the one shouted at you the loudest.

What are you looking for in a phone? What size screen would you like? Would you like a physical KB? What do you use your phone for the most? What would you like to use it for that you are unable to do now? How important is battery life?

Atrix or the nexus.
HTC sense on the Atrix. Sense makes life easy (I think)
Nexus, pure google power. Always first to get the update so is always running the newest firmware

SO I had this nice long response written out on the Boards Express app but it kept causing problems (scrolling to the top of the page randomly) and then when I finished writing it out, the app crashed when trying to post it (it happens more than it should, yet when I was using tapatalk on my 3G this was never a problem.

My work uses Exchange 2003. Our IT department already looked into this issue and couldn't find a reason why. Being that I am the only person at my work with WP7, I am not going to demand that keep looking and wasting their time. But it would be very nice to have internet on my phone as most of our production facilities are overseas and I usually get emails from them in the evenings after I have left the office.

I really miss my apps I used when I had my iPhone. A lot of these same apps are available on Android but not WP7. WP7 has some ok replacements for these apps but many are buggy (see above). I know the market place is still very new for WP7 but there are just too many missing apps that I loved having that I cannot get and I am jealous that my wife still has. Not to mention not a whole lot of 3rd Party developers are creating for WP7. Mango release might help that but it still is a long time coming.

Another part is the games. I am not some super phone gamer, nor do I care about how good a phone's GPU is. I don't play the 3D games like NFS or Assassin's Creed. But I really miss a lot of the strategy games that were fun and could help kill time while on the bus (like Game Dev Story).

As for size, honestly the bigger the better. I have large hands and when I occasionally find myself using my wife's iPhone 4, it seems way too small for me and my hands feel cramped if I am holding it with both hands while in landscape mode. I like thin phones but a larger screen is very nice IMO.

No I don't want an actual keyboard. I just want a phone with a good enough keyboard that I don't find myself constantly spelling words wrong. Some days it seems worse than others but I swear sometimes I can look directly at the key, press it almost perfectly and still watch the phone select the key above or beside it.

Battery life is a major annoyance currently. With the mango update, my battery life has dropped off to only 2 hours of moderate use. Before mango I was getting close 5 hours of moderate-heavy use (constant web surfing/listening to music). Now if I don't charge the phone while I am at work, it will usually be dead right around the time I get home. This is with 1 hour of moderate use on the bus ride into work, answering the occasional call/text throughout the day and the another hour of moderate use on the bus ride home. The powersave mode with Mango helped stretch my last 10% of my battery out but overall I am not pleased with it.

Also tethering. Tethering is a big bonus for me. I currently tether my phone to my laptop sometimes on my bus ride to work if I need to get some work done before I make it into the office. The OS makes me restart to switch from tethering to regular syncing which can get annoying.

The Nexus S is basically the Focus with a faster GPU running Android.

I'd go with the Atrix. Even if you find yourself missing Windows Phone 7, someone's neatly packaged nearly the entire OS into a single Android app: https://market.android.com/details?id=info.tikuwarez.launcher3

out of those Atrix or Atrix 2, I would suggest the Galaxy S II it has a premium price but it is the current technology leader

Galaxy S II for sure, the screen on the Atrix is absolutely horrid. I sold my Atrix after 2 weeks and got a SII and have never had a single regret. But if you really cant have it the Atrix at least has CM7 now, with the stock motoblur it felt slower than most a single core phone.
