Asus Xonar DG vs D1

Thread Starter
can anyone enlighten me as to the practical/experiential difference between the DG and the D1?

i used to have a D1 and loved it. i'm wondering now if i should rebuy it, or go with a DG for my needs instead?

notes:

1) i primarily use headphones, ATH-m50s.

2) first i game, then i listen to music.

3) i use linux, so good linux compatibility is a must.

any thoughts, then, on the differences between these cards? is the D1 really worth an extra $50 for my needs?

i'm also willing to consider the DS, since it uses the same chip as the D1, but then i lose the amp. which may be fine, since my D1 didn't have an amp and i still loved it. my cans are pretty low impedance anyway.

thanks!

first you game then you listen to music..............you must look for X-Fi cards

anyway , between the 2 cards the D1 is better , better build quality , 7.1 (in case you have a set) , better audio performance , the DG has a headphone AMP but using the (38 ohms) ATH-m50 you dont need one

but IMO the D1 dose not worth the extra 50$ , the worthy one is the PCIe version the DX

and dont think about getting the DS unless you are a fan of OP-AMPs swapping

thanks for the input, crag, but X-Fi is a no go because i use Linux. =) Xonars work under Linux, X-fi does not.

also, i prefer the powered PCI card vs. adding the molex for the PCI-e card.

hmmm...........i forgot about this point (working under Linux)

anyway the D1 and DX are the same , but i personally prefer PCIe cards maybe in the future you want to create CF/SLI or now new MoBos have only 1 PCI slot maybe in the near future they will have none

so dont worry , if you got the D1 you will enjoy it very much

In all honesty if you're just using headphones and aren't using speakers much, the DG is the way to go.

Built-in headphone amp, cheap, and will provide you with enough oomph to power most headphones.

^ this. the DG is basically a corner-cut D1 with 5.1 instead of 7.1. I have the xonar pci spectrum (dg,d1,st) as well as the ath m50s, and the difference between DG and D1 is negligible, maybe slightly in favor of the DG with its amp (i don't believe the D1 has one, as the OP suggested). D1 is more of a HTPC card with its SPDIF out and 7.1 capability. so headphones & 2.1 speaker setups=DG. 5.1 or 7.1 speaker setups=D1.

Yeah even at that you can use the DG with a 5.1 setup. The only lacking issue with the DG and any surround sound is a lack of DD Live! licensing (which is why it's cheaper). So while you'll have no problems with DTS or AC3 decoding (provided the source material is coded with it) or other 5.1 PCM streams, any games (like BFBC2) that use DD Live! won't give you real surround sound.

I use my DG with headphones 50/50 to my 5.1 setup (usually in stereo mode).

My DG is Toslink -> receiver -> 5.1/2.1 and my headphones are plugged into the 3.5mm jack. Works a charm.

Hey everyone
I got microlab solo-6 which is a decent 2.0 setup. not good, but not bad either. anyway, the other day I plugged my portable philips flac player (has its own good quality dsp i guess) to this 2.0speakers I have. I couldnt believe how clear the sound is. I just realised the crappiness of my onboard realtek alc892 and got into proper dedicated sound card explorations..

xonar line up is what I will buy. one of them but I cant decire which one yet. In my country, these cards are not available. I have to buy it over ebay. cheapest dg costs about 50bucks, ds 85 bucks, d1 110 bucks-all shipping included. I have the cash so budget is no problem. I can buy d1 or now im seriously giving a thought about buying a DG With ath-m50 headphones. my asking is: only DG has headphone amp support? or dg will be enough for my 2.0 speakers also??

I couldnt be more dissapointed about how crapp this onboard sounds. ppl state things like onboard audio got better. I used to own nvidia nForce ultra motherboard with its own nvidia onboard sound few years back, which was clearly better than this realtek 892.. shame how marketing ppl fooling us.
