What is the best overall headset?

Thread Starter
I am looking to purchase the best headset available. My budget is $500. I intend to play FPS games, online games, and strategy games. I also intend to listen to music, watch movies while using the headset, use the mic while playing games or using Skype, etc. The headset *must* have a microphone.

My question is simple: which headset is the best overall performer? That is, some headsets specialize in gaming but not music, and vice-versa. I currently use the onboard sound on my ASUS Extreme-Z motherboard. I have been told that adding a sound card will make a slight improvment, but not significantly. If I heard wrong, please let me know.

I have been considering the following models:

Sennheiser PC 350 Gaming Headset ($179.95)
http://www.sennheiserusa.com/noise-c...pe-voip_502141

Sennheiser PC 360 Headset for Pro Gaming ($169.99)
http://www.sennheiserusa.com/PC-head...headset-504122

Sony DR-GA500 PC Gaming Audio Headset ($199.99)
http://store.sony.com/webapp/wcs/sto...52921666253165

Beyerdynamic MMX 300 PC Gaming Premium Digital Headset with Mic ($349)
http://north-america.beyerdynamic.co...a/mmx-300.html

Razer Tiamat 7.1 Surround Sound Gaming Set ($179.99) (this model has not been released yet; I am having trouble finding good reviews)
http://www.razerzone.com/tiamat/en

I have been a member of OCN for over a month now. Although I have read many reviews on other web sites on the above headsets, I have learned from experience that the members of OCN provide the best feedback. I have no favorite on the above list. In fact, if you know of a better headset not listed above, please let me know so I can do some research.

Your feedback is greatly appreciated. Many thanks.

The headsets I have owned are the Logitech G35 and as of right now I have the new Corsair Vengeance 1500. The vengeance is a lot more comfortable than the G35 and sound better due to the 50mm drivers than the 40 on the logitech but the mic quality on the G35 is better. Just trying to help ya out if you want to look at these 2 headsets also.

Thank you Twinkadink for mentioning the Corsair Vengeance 1500. I overlooked that model. I will do some research. We can add this model to the above list:

Audio Technica AD700 = Unbeatable Positional Audio (soundstage) + Great Highs/Mids - Needs EQing to produce good lows.

Sen HD555 - Good Positional Sound + All around Performer

These + a zalman clipon mic would be far better than any gaming headset for gaming and music.

PC350 is a HD595 thats been made awful.

Also id say a soundcard would make a very big diff in SQ and virtual 3D.

Virtual 3D > 5/7.1 headsets as you only have 2 cups. 1 big, high quality driver beats 7 ****ty ones

I know you don't want a separate mic. So I won't recommend one.

I recommend the Sennheiser PC 350. They're amazing for FPS (I've owned it myself). If you decide on this a good soundcard should help plenty.

The mic on the Senn PC350 was great, and the sound quality for music and games were great.

I would be pissed off if I specified in my OP that I wanted a HEADSET and not a separate pair of phones and a mic, if people were recommending that.

Some people want a good headset not a separate mic.

2nded...... ppl r dum

lol.........

Back to the OP.... I think HD555's or AD700's plus Zalman Mic is a great combo and I was in your boat wanting one with a built in Mic. But, then what happens if the Mic bugs out? And of course it is inconvenient with movies/music.....

If you really want one with a Mic though then I recommend an Astro Gaming headset or a Keep in mind most headsets with a mic in $50 - $250 price range are labeled as gaming headsets as they are more tailored for that as a first priority and movies/music second. That is another reason I went with the HD555's plus a Zalman mic as they did everything well.
