What is the best overall headset? - Page 2

I never heard of the Astro Gaming headset. That model looks very intriguing. I will do some research. Thanks RoddimusPrime!

Let's add this model to the list:
Astro A40 Gaming Headset ($199)
http://www.astrogaming.com/headsets/...-astro-edition

One concern I have with the PC 360 is the "open acoustics." Without adequate noise cancellation, I am unsure how good these headphones would be. Also, I need to make sure the sounds I am listening to cannot be heard by other people nearby (unless they are sitting very close to me).

I have been receiving recommendations of purchasing the headphone and boom mic seperately. I never considered this combination before because I try to keep all of these accessories as simple as possible. However, if seperating them provides superior sound quality for all of my needs, I am willing to reconsider.

Let's augment this thread with two recommendations:

(1) What headset (with integrated headphone and mic) is the best overall performer?
(2) What headphone and separate boom mic is the best overall performer?

Again, my budget is $500 unless you can recommend a truly exceptional product that would justify the additional cost above $500.

Many thanks everyone. I really appreciate your feedback.

PC350 is a HD595 thats been made awful.

Also id say a soundcard would make a very big diff in SQ and virtual 3D.

Virtual 3D > 5/7.1 headsets as you only have 2 cups. 1 big, high quality driver beats 7 ****ty ones

Pwnography: what is your recommendation? A Senheiser HD555 with a Zalman clip-on mic?

Also, can you elaborate on your comment on the difference between Virtual 3D and 7.1? Unfortunately, I have never experienced the difference directly and do not know anyone who owns any of these headsets. I would appreciate it if you could step me through your reasoning.

Thanks,

Just my two cents... Astro A40s are my choice of headset along with all of my friends and most people I see at any major Halo tournament. Also have great customer support, sound quality is amazing, and can wear em for hours on end

Crag,

Thanks for mentioning the Ultrasone Pro 550. I have never heard of these headphones before. I am now doing research on the Ultrasone models.

Everyone:

One big benefit of the Astro A40 is that I can also use the same headset with my XBox 360. I never thought of having one headset for not only for games, music, movies, but also for my gaming console. As far as headsets go, the A40s are now on the top of my list.

I am reading really good reviews on purchasing the Astro mixamp (not the headset) and then purchasing the best earphones of your choice. Anyone have an experience with this kind of setup (not necessarily having the Astro mixamp, but a similar headphone amplifier setup).

I have also read extraordinary reviews of the Beyerdynamic MMX 300s. Anyone have any experience with these headphones?

FYI...
I just noticed that the top-of-the-line Ultrasone, the "Ultrasone Edition 10," is a whopping $2,749! http://ultrasone.com/stores/us/Ultra...dition-10.html
I had no idea headphones can get so expensive. Needless to say, I will not be buying that model.

Soundstage on the Ultrasone 550 Pro is not as good as the PC360's.

They are very accurate, with decent bass (not weak) with a quality mic.

MMX300s are the best headset on the list and the best headset that I'm aware of.

If using them on your xbox is a huge bonus you can simply buy the Astro Mixamp and use it with the MMX300.

The Astro A40s themselves are not that great. Many people skip them and just buy the mixamp which is decent.

Okay since you gave evidence that you are contemplating a headpone + clip on mic combo.

I can vouch for the HD555 + zalman clip on mic combo. I bought a used HD555 from FearSC549 here on OCN for $65 and ordered the Zalman mic from amazon for $9 with prime.

Once you get the HD555 listen to them for about an hour or so and then go do the HD555 to HD595 mod. Its super simple, open it up and peal off the foam hidden behind the drivers. Voila free upgrade!

Actual 7.1 surround sound is where if something is infront of you, the sound comes out of the front speakers. This is how 5/7.1 headsets work but obviously unlike a full speaker set all the speakers are tiny and really very close to each other and all at the side of you (+/- 10degrees). Virutal Surround works by balancing the sound coming out of each ear so that it gives the appearance that the sound is coming from the left shall we say. This allows you to have a headset with 2 large speakers meaning the quality can be much better.

the zalman clip ($10) on mic is very small and just attaches to the wire and any Hi-Fi headset will be better for everything than a similarly priced gaming headset.

I myself am an audiophile as well as a gamer and i would upgrade my AD700s to the AD900s or AD1000 if they weren't so damn good and resilient. They fall of my seat nearly every day and they are as good as the day i got them (minor cosmetic damage excluded). They are made of metal so feel quality and yet are the most comfortable headphones ive ever worn, i can wear them for 24 hours straight with no discomfort at all, barely know they are on. They also sit over your ears completely so theres no pressure on your ear. Big soundstage (positional sound) means they are perfect from competitive gaming and many matches of Counter strike have been won courtesy of them

Hope i was some help

The HD555s are also good but they were too small for my ears and not so comfortable.

@Jo0...upgrading from a HD555 to a HD595 is a simple as removing the foam behind the drivers? In other words, we would have to pay a premium for a layer of foam? Wow. I am really suprised.

@Simca...I am hearing more and more people both here and on other forums that the Beyerdynamic MMX300 is the best overall performer. I am also hearing excellent reviews about the Astro Mixamp 5.8.

Everyone:
Based on what I have learned over the past couple of days, I am now leaning towards the MMX300 along with an Astro Mixamp 5.8. The headset ($350) + Mixamp ($140) + PC connector for the Mixamp ($10) = $500...exactly my budget limit.

I am still doing research. If anyone has additional comments/suggestions/etc., please let me know.

Thanks,

Vailen
