Noob question ov i5 vs i7

Thread Starter
So I'm building a system pretty soon, mostly for gaming. This is it if you care to look:http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/Pu...umber=21777867

Anyways, I just want to know the definitive difference between the 2500k and 2600k in terms of gaming performance. Everyone says to go with the 2500k for gaming since HT is not needed. I just want to know if people keep suggesting the 2500k because it's cheaper or because it actually performs better?

Price between the two isn't an issue for me. If the 2500k can do everything the 2600k in gaming, I'd rather just get the 2600k for future proofing and for nerd cred. But if the 2500k is better for gaming in some regard (not counting price) I would love to know it and why.

the difference is hyperthreading, thats it.
future games may become more and more threaded, so, if money means nothing to you get the 2600k.
if money means something, get the 2500k...you will be golden with either

Hyper threading doesn't show any real advantage in most games. If you are buying a processor for gaming, the 2500k would be a better value for you. You can use the money saved to buy a better GPU.

The 2500k is not better then 2600k, more so just equal. All the 2600k offers over the 2500k is hyper threading which as stated before isn't used by games yet. If you have the money and want to be future proof then go with the 2600k. Who knows, games may start using hyper threading. 2600k is also nice if you ever do any video encoding or Folding@Home. Also good for the nerd cred.

Depends on what you do. For example the things I do, HT reduced performance.

Rep to you all. Thanks everyone. Looks like I'll be going with the 2600k, since I'm also somewhat interested in folding. Also, if HT starts to negatively affect my games, I can just switch it off, correct?

You can also just manually assign core affinities, if you don't want to have to restart and change BIOS settings each time.

Anyway, most OSes and programs are well aware of HT at this point, and the chances of it hurting a games performance is pretty miniscule.

get the i5, if in a year or 2 games start to use HT, worry about that then, and it will be time to get some new IB anyway
