Buy a 1TB Caviar Black for $60 and a $20 USB powered enclosure for $15 off of Newegg.

What i like to do for external/portable hdds, is make my own, mainly cause if the drive fails or the case fails, i just replace either, and i also go with hdds i like. For enclosures im using, COOLMAX HD-250TN-U3 Aluminum 2.5" Gray USB 3.0 External Enclosure, for hdds i had a [ame="http://www.amazon.com/Hitachi-Travelstar-2-5-Inch-Internal-0J11563/dp/B00486TKYY"]Hitachi 5k750[/ame] and [ame="http://www.amazon.com/Spinpoint-HM640JJ-Plug--Module-Drive/dp/B004FG9Y9I/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1318901029&sr=8-3"]Spinpoint MP4 HM640JJ[/ame], but if you want 1tb, you could go with [ame="http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-SpinPoint-5400rpm-2-5-Inch-HN-M101MBB/dp/B0053YLTBC/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1318901604&sr=1-1"]Samsung SpinPoint M8 (HN-M101MBB)[/ame], or if you like prebuilds, then go with either,

Well its not a must, but tranfering big amount data is painful on usb2, so yea i would say its good idea to go ubs3, even if you dont have usb3 ports, as its retro compatible.
