Burnt Cable Help!

Thread Starter
I was leak testing my loop yesterday and 2 of my fans went out. I looked at the back of the computer and wowser, the cable had melted!

What's with this? Is this a short in one of the fans? Too many fans on the cable? A faulty cable?

I have 9 fans running 4 on one Y cable, 3 on another Y cable, and 2 on another....all plugged into a sunbeam fan port.

7 had been running for a while and so I plugged 2 more in and looked away for a few minutes to come back and see this. The sleeving had melted and a couple of the copper cables had actually broke.

Any help is appreciated.

If I understand you right, you had them ALL running on that one cable?
If so, then way too much for it. As it is, the 7 you had running was probably pushing the limits of what that cable could take.

you tried to pull too much power through that thin of a wire.

remember to use the right gauge wire for the current draw of your fans.

I have 3 4-Way Y cables all plugged into a 6 port sunbeam fan port. Maybe the fan cables I bought were cheap cables.

I guess I am going to need some advice on how to hookup 13 fans. It seems that most people are running them off of one fan controller and it would seem that the sunbeam fan port should handle those. Maybe I am wrong.

Thanks for helping!

Is that a Voltage controller, or PWM controller?
If it's a voltage controller, then it takes some designing to get the wiring right.
If it's a PWM controller, then you can run the fans off of the Molex cables and run the PWM signal from the controller out to the fans.
