240mm Rad or 120mm Rad for CPU only loop.

Thread Starter
I plan on doing a CPU only loop soon. Is it ABSOLUTELY required that I use a 240mm rad? Or can or will I get the same performance off a 120mm rad as long as I keep it CPU only.

I dont think there's enough room at the bottom of my case for a 240mm rad, as my PSU gets in the way and so does the power inlet.

I want to get the EK supreme block so I can be "future proof" for CPU blocks as they keep making brackets for it. As for a pump I'll probably get a D5 if it's a 120mm rad and a DDC if I get a 240m rad.

EDIT: OR I could do a 120mm rad at the bottom of the case that links into another 120mm rad at the rear of the case.

Have you considered an all-in-one setup?

For a cpu only loop a single 120mm should suffice. You can always go push-pull on the fans.

Haha, if you do that it's just like getting an all-in-one like the H80 except extremely overkill and more expensive.

I recommend a 240mm radiator; why? Just because you can and it does better.

And also, placing a radiator at the bottom of the case is fine, sounds good actually but watchout as you are probably going for intake (dust mites beware!)

Its your money and pc. But I can tell you watercooling is addictive so if you cool only your cpu get a rx240 so later you can add a video card that you will but under water later lol

The way I see it is that I'll never WC a GPU. It's too frequent of an update to justify me to WC it. I think what I'll do is get the Black Ice 120 "Highest Performance" rad. And use that on the rear of my case.

Another option is to get a 240rad, you can get a Universal GPU block. But yeah. A closed system loop like the H-series, or a 120rad should suffice
post #10 of 10
As long as you get a good quality 120mm radiator such as the RX120 it will work fine, but the temps won't be equal to even a cheap 240mm. I use to use an RX120 on my old QX6700 and it worked fine at about 1.35v, I would go up to 70+c 100% load on IBT. If you wanted "water cooling" temps the 240mm is worth it. You can always mount the radiator outside of the case, I took a photo of my rig with the 480mm rad on the top of the case.

I don't know your budget so I'm going to link to some of the highest quality radiators. My recommendations for the 120 is the RX120, it's great for using really slow fans. As for a 240mm rad I recommend the RX240 for low speed fans or the GTX240 for extreme high speed fans (Deltas).

Also, if you go with the 120mm or the 240mm the d5 will be fine. No need to go back and forth between the d5 and the ddc. The 2x 120mm radiators is a good idea and will give you the same performance of a single 240mm.

Have fun "chillen" -Zac
