My First Build

Thread Starter
Hey guys, pumped about building my first computer. I've never selected components and built all from scratch, but i have done a ton of tinkering in my time.

Heres what i've selected so far,

COOLER MASTER HAF X Blue Edition
(http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119239)

I7 2600k ( considering waiting for the 2700k )

ASUS Maximus IV Extreme-Z Z68
(http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131760)

SAPPHIRE 100310SR Radeon HD 6990 4GB
(http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102927)

CORSAIR Professional Series Gold AX1200
(http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139014)

Western Digital Caviar Black 1.5TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache Bare Drive
(http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136592)

SAMSUNG Black 12X BD-ROM 16X DVD-/+R 48X CD-ROM SATA Internal Blu-ray
(http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827151232)

Already have:
Lamptron FC Touch - 30W - 6 Channel Aluminium Rheobus w/ Touch Screen
(http://www.frozencpu.com/products/12285/bus-243/Lamptron_FC_Touch_-_30W_-_6_Channel_Aluminum_Rheobus_w_Touch_Screen_-_Black_FCT_HOT_ITEM.html?tl=g34c17)

A few questions i have are;

Does this mobo have 4 full x16 lanes? The way newegg words it is confusing me a little.

How many full 6gbs SATA ports does this have? 2 or 4?

I don't understand the difference in the brands of graphic cards, do they all just have different ways of cooling?

Regarding the WD HDD, it is "Bare" will i need to buy any cables or will my case come with all i need to hook this up?

I've decided to go with the 1200w PCU because i plan on crossfiring eventually and i wanted something rated "gold" and fully modular.

I need some help picking the ram for sure, i really wanted something more then 2000 with cas @ least 9.

As for CPU cooling i'm between getting a custom kit or the H100. I know im going to OC the cpu but I'm iffy about OCing the GPU because i know next to nothing about doing this. If i did OC the GPU i would like to go with the custom WC kit and install a water block on my card. I'd like some suggestions on some custom kits. Also if anyone knows how big of a radiator i can fit in this case that would be helpful.

Do any of the 6990's not void warranty if you water block.

Whats the best brand of the 6990?

I'm not to worried about how expensive this rig is as long as it doesint get to crazy.

Thanks for your help guys! & Game on! sniper.gif

Ok, wow first comp, and you have quite a budget.

1) This is mainly for gaming?
Go with the Intel 2500K, or wait 1 month for the Sandy bridge exetreme cores, or wait 2 months and get the Ivy chipset cores

2) 1200w is insane and is completely uneeded!

3) 6990? man ur going all out!
Just save some money and just either get a GTX 580 or a 6970. Unless you want to spend all your money on the GPU. And i advise against SLI/CF especially for a first time builder.

4) "bare" HDD drives is purely just the drive, and all the cables that you need for it come with your motherboard (to connect it to the motherboard) and the SATA power connector (which comes with the Power supply).

5) Because you have a massive budget get a at least 128GB SSD drive (crucial M4) to boot your OS on, you will see an insane difference from a HDD booting, then get a HDD for data storage (Samsung F3 or a Hitachi 7K deskstar)

6) if you plan on getting that sandy bridge, throttle down that MOBO and get a Asus Z68 Pro, or a P8p67 Deluxe.

7) I would highly advise against a build over 2000$, because within 3-4 months there will be bigger and better things and within 2 years there will be parts wayy ahead and faster then yours and you can build a comp for around 1300-1600 every 2-4 years and get the best bang for your buck and not waste your money for the absolute fastest parts at the moment.

Unless you are blitzed out of your mind rich and then go gung ho and get what ever your heart desires

EDIT: Ugh man that GPU is a not just a single GPU, it is a dual processor card, meaning there is 2 GPU's so to water block that you would need both to be covered and water cooling is extremely expensive and very uneeded, unless you are enthusiastic and just want to see how far your computer can go, and by seeing you bought an alienware (you poor soul) all you want is gaming and water cooling is a waste and is just to brag about your machine and we don't like when rich ppl just build a super powerful system then rubs it in our faces

EDIT2: *facepalm* the more i read the more i am hesitant that you can build this complex system. The only time you can void a warranty (a bit different for each company) but if you Overclock that does not void the warranty, nor does opening the card. What does it physically damaging the card by opening it, or by being stupid and super overclocking at the beginning and going straight for max, or by flashing BIOS and raising the Voltage on the card

Just my advice, I think a Sli/CrossFire 580/6970. But if you insist on a 6990, I would say Hi5, MSI, or Sapphire. Maybe XFX. <<this out.

I believe so, but they are be insanely expensive, like any exetreme cores and is purely just to brag and test for highest benchmarks.

If you already have 1 Vertex 120 maybe buy another and slap it into RAID 0

RAID can be a pain, but is not as bad as SLI/CF

1) we need a budget

2) what will you be doing with this computer

3) read my first post, don't just sluf it off

As far as CPU, inchy97 has it right: go with the 2500k. It IS the fastest Sandy Bridge as far as gaming is concerned.

GPU-wise, MSI makes great stuff, but if you're set on Gigabyte, they're not bad either. XFX is the only one that still has a lifetime warranty though. Up to you.
