You're right, they didn't back then because 2560x1440 didn't exist. Even if they did have a choice between the two, they would've gone for 2560x1600 monitors because it displays more content at one time - something you've agreed with so don't even try to argue about that. Andrews2547 even confirmed it in the post above.
And there will be even higher resolution monitors after that, big deal.
Not really sure where they pull their data from, plus the rest of their market share data goes against what you were just arguing about earlier how old=/=common because 1024x768 tops everything on that list which is older than the 16:9 resolutions listed under it.
