Clearwire

I'm thinking about switching my ISP. I currently have to pay MORE then what my ISP originally asked for. I don't know if it's taxes or whatever, but I don't want to live with the cost of my current connection.

Clearwire is offered in my area, though only at 2mbps speeds. I can live with going slower (I currently have a 5mbps connection), as the monthly rate is far lower then what I currently pay. I've read some good things and some bad things. It seems like service is either hit and miss, or a lot of people can't read.

Anyway, what do you guys recommend? Again, I can live with slower speeds, as all I really do is use Netflix and the occasional game download with chatting and general web surfing being what I do the most.

My recommendation is NOT Clearwire. Ever. Period. No Cox internet, try to avoid getting internet through a satellite company. DSL in general is kind-of terrible, but passable. If you torrent do not get AT&T.

In descending order of my preference:
Google Internet (very limited availability)
Verizon FIOS
Time Warner Broad/Wide Band internet.
Charter (if you know how to handle crappy customer service well).

The problem is, I can't get any of those listed above. Heck, the only two somewhat well known ISPs I can get are Cable One and Clearwire. I currently use Cable One, and they're starting to over charge me. I can live with slower speeds if it means a smaller bill.

Let me offer you the advice as one who used to work at a re-seller of Clearwire.

Utter S&!t.

We weren't just a re-seller of Clearwire, we also used them as our backup Internet solution for our tech area. That backup went down more times in a week than our primary did in 6 months! Highly unreliable, and the hardware they use is complete junk.

However, that is not the worst part. Their customer/technical support is horrendous. First of all, they let any Larry, Moe and Curly sell it out of their truck. We dropped the re-seller account partly because of this, and partly (mostly) because of the terribad quality. However, one further thing - they will NOT accept "no" as an answer. When we dropped, we had to have the friggin' President of our company call the account rep to get them to finalize our terminated contract. After that they STILL hounded us with phone calls and "special offers" to get us to sign up again as both a customer and re-seller.

As for the technical support - it's worse than the worst stereotype of outsourced third-world country phone support. And they're stateside.

Well, alright. Can anyone recommend a widely available ISP that offers at least a 1.5mbps connection on the cheap? I can live with a slow connection, but I can't live with no connection.

Get DSL from somebody then.

Just a thought, but what is ur cable company over charging you on? Are you sure they are going over what their terms say? I find that cable tends to get better results for a consistent/reliable connection compared to other services.

I have no clue, they're just $15 over the agreed on rate. Eh... maybe I'm just nit picking. Regardless, I'd much rather get something cheaper right now. Now is the time to save money, not to have high speed stuff.

Any ideas how CenturyLink is like?

Call the ISP and ask why the additional charge exists. They are obligated by law to spell out why each charge exists as a line item if requested.

I just did. Turns out I'm only renting the modem and they're counting some days they didn't bill me for last month or something. Odd.

SO! Here's my plan. It's not perfect, but it should bring me down to an acceptable level.
Buy a modem.
...
That's really it. That should bring me down to the advertised rate.

Well, good to know, good to know.
