Best model of HD 6990 at the moment?

I am helping a buddy plan out a new rig but I really don't know anything about 6990's since I have never dealt with them or owned any.

This is going to be a completely air cooled rig since I do not know how to assemble water cooling, but he hasn't chosen a case yet so I can't really say anything about that in terms of cooling the card.

Another 6990 will be added to the rig a few months after assembling the rig

Preferably not on NewEgg so California sales tax can be avoided.

Any recommendations on a 6990?

Also, some words of encouragement would be nice. This guy has $3000 and he was going to buy an Alienware desktop for $2500 before I stopped him. It had a previous generation i7 CPU and and a 6950. He is still very skeptical about having someone assemble a PC for him, so some words of encouragement would be great. Will be showing him this thread tomorrow.

Let your friend build your comp for you. If something should go wrong, you can pester him instead of having to go through the hassle of contacting customer support. Plus, should a piece of hardware go bad early, you can return it for a refund or replacement instead of returning the whole machine. Plus, he's your friend, good luck with your build.

Edit Added: Oh, and the on the 6990, as cliche as this might sound, it's really up to you.

They don't make them with custom coolers?

Wouldn't that be a little bit of a heat issue with 2 of them running in an air cooled case with a 2500k? Reference coolers are pretty horrible on ATI cards.

He wants the case to be silent as well so I can't use any of those high performance case fans. I'll probably use some cooler master silent fans for the build (19 dB, 60 CFM).

They make after market coolers for them but all the 6990's I have seen all use ref cooling.

With $3000 budget he can get TWO 6990 NOW!! without waiting a few mths.

CPU: i7-2600k $300
Motherboard: any $250
CPU cooler: $80
Ram: 8 gb DDR3 1600 mhz $60
SSD: 60 gb $100
HHD storage: 1 tb $40
Case: $150-200
2 x 6990: $1500

total: ~$2500

for a case i go with something with a big Fan on the side like this:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811119213

or capable with lots of fans on the side:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811146067

Remember the 6990s sucks air from the case and blows it over the heatsinks and then out the exhaust... so you want lots of 'intake' fans from the side and front.

The budget accounts for a monitor, sound card, headset, mouse, keyboard, and mousepad as well as some other accessories.

He'll have another $1500 to spend in a few months so he'll pick up 2 monitors and another 6990.
