Corsair HS1A very quiet

Thread Starter
So I recently bought a HS1A headset because it got many good reviews, and was expecting a huge upgrade compared to my cheap $7 headset I was currently using.

Anyway, I plugged it into both my rear and front audio ports and low and behold although decent balanced sound, extremely quiet. Like to the point where every volume (system, game, and actual volume control on headset) has to be turned to 100% otherwise it's not even at a medium listening volume.

Okay I am using onboard audio, but I have an ASUS Rampage III Formula which is supposed to be pretty decent. I don't mind spending a little money into a sound card, but I don't want to do it to only find out the headset itself is the problem. Just curious if anyone else has had similar issues with this headset?

This does seem rather strange... you could try looking up the most recent drivers for the on-board audio for your R3F, as well as the headset and make sure they are both installed fresh. Barring this I'm guessing, from stories I've heard here, a quick call to Corsair may clear this up. If you describe to them the issue you're having with the headset they very well may start up an RMA process for you as they could be defective some how.

Good luck either way it works out, sorry I don't have a super quick fix.

Do yours sound very anemic? I got a pair and, to be honest, the $10 IEM's from Radioshack sound bigger and better (strange, with the HS1A having "50mm drivers")

I was hoping they would sound very similar to my sennheiser hd428's & id be able to game with them.. but nooooooo.

Some people say that they are very similar sounding to the RX700's. But definitely there's something wrong with your headset, being 32ohm they are/should be easy to drive.

Oh yeah reason I don't want to RMA these headphones is because I bought them in Hong Kong (yes, they are legit) and when traveling back home I threw away the box to make more room in my suit case. I shouldn't have done that. Anyway I just bought a sound card on here (X-Fi Titanium). Hopefully that should solve the problem (I HOPE), if not, at least I know for sure it's the headset, then can move on to bigger and better (and most likely more expensive) things .

On a side note, any recommendations on a good headphone amp?

I had to look up the definition for the word "anemic" . But yes, I agree. Compared to the cheap $7 headset I was using prior that I got from newegg, it barely sounds cleaner. But the soundstage itself seems smaller because it feels like the volume on it compared to the other headset is like 50% lower. Yes definitely I agree I expected more from these headphones. I'm hoping with a dedicated sound card it's gonna suddenly be awesome since that's what the HS1A is supposedly designed for vs the USB version.

So installed a new PSU in my machine last night (went from 700 watt to 1050 for future-proofing). Also rerouted the front panel audio cable to try and remove the static noise (didn't work BTW) Just for fun wanted to test out the headset again. for some reason the headset sounded much louder and much better. However, the mic volume on it still sucked, and static noise (this has more to do with the case or whatever) still there...interesting.

Perhaps the headset itself just needs a breaking-in period? or maybe the additional power from the PSU somehow got translated to giving more juice to the headset through the onboard?
