And it's not about honor... it's about rewarding the companies who actually care about doing good things correctly for their customers, even if you are just one person.
I agree with you until here, then you added the 3rd paragraph that needs a word stronger than "misunderstanding". Don't worry about it though, I expect you'll read that post later (along with a trip to dictionary.com) and wonder why you interpreted it that way.

^^ my new favorite drive after the 640gb caviar blacks and spinpoint F3 1tb
I'm glad Hitachi has stepped their game up. Caviar blacks can get quite pricey and the availability of Samsung drives is atrocious here.

When I said there were other manufacturers, I meant it more like "Ok, WD isn't the only company out there. Just buy a different drive". OCN, I love you. But there's no denying members here read posts the wrong way, and make bigger deals then there has to be Also, I believe if there is any sort of smiley or crazy face in the post, logic dictates it's humorous.

Hard drives are the one part I'm not willing to gamble on. I can deal with other hardware problems but I absolutely hate it when i lose data to a hard drive crash.

Bet the other companies are just increasing their prices because they can now. Why sell for less profit if you don't have to?

Also, didn't the earthquake in Japan damage factories responsible for the read heads on harddrives. That shortage was supposed to increase HD prices as well.

Unfortunately, nearly everyone has increased their prices. A Seagate barracuda XT i was eyeing yesterday doubled in price overnight, similar story for most other brands.

Wow, lots of brand preferences across the board...which is to be expected. Seems a lot of people like Samsung HDDs, a brand of HD I wouldn't touch with a 25 mile pole. And correct me if I am wrong, but Hitachi was bought by WD a few months back for a couple billion dollars. Yup, it was Hitachi

WD, Samsung and Seagate are the only players in the game right now IIRC.

No, it's just WD and Seagate. Seagate bought Samsung's HDD division.
