Need Help Overclocking to 4.2Ghz. i7 930 is Overheating 85- 90C on Prme95

Thread Starter
I am overclockng a PC here thats got a EVGA x58 SLI LE / SLI3 and a i7 930 @ 4.2Ghz (21x 200), and its under 1.35 volts, I am using I think a H70 (push pull setup inside a open case). The temps go up to 85 - 90C in a few mins of Prime95 and then my CPU starts to throttle back and drops to 2300-2400Mhz and the multi drops to 12X. confused.gif

Need some hard but cool solutions please poke.gif

I imagine that OC is pushing the capabilities of a meagre h70.

First off though I would try reseating it and applying some higher end thermal paste. If not you could try improving case airflow and cleaning the radiator and making sure there are no kinks in the tubes but to be honest I think this will have little affect.

Get a better cooler!

I guess you are right frown.gif
Just followed a template and dropped the overclock to 4GHz with HT on. Been a few mins and temps are at 76C rising.

Damn I wish there was more I could do..I expected it to hold a 4.2GHz + clock and still stay under 60C..I guess I asked too much.frown.gif

Tbh I bet you could cool that to 60C with air! In fact in know you could. Might be noisy though!

1.34v with loadline is a lot of juice. If I were you I would disable HT and try and pull back on the vcore.

Try disabling HT and see how you go as this should drop the temps by about 8c and see if that stops it throttling back. Then you may be able to keep HT on.
on the other hand If you are sitting on mid 70's @ 4Ghz with HT on and you are happy with 4Ghz then you need to decide if the extra 4 threads or the extra 200mhz is more important to you.

Once thats stable see how the temps go in some gaming. People go about temps in prime95 and intelburn test etc but they will be way higher than gaming more often than not.

Either way will struggle to get the temps much lower with the H70.

Also you need to remember 4.2 Ghz is a 50% oc, you are starting to really push the cpu and any higher needs nuts voltages and much more extensive cooling than you have.

Good luck

On my 920 I sit at about 65c at 4.1 1.35vcore linx load. Not all chips will do 4.2...mine only does it at 1.6vcore and 95c linx load. I wasnt comfortable with those temps or voltages so i have it at 4.1 right now. I know the 930 is a newer chip, but I've heard it takes more vcore to hit the same clocks at the 920...just my 2 cents smile.gif

I am running a similar rig with similar clocks.

With sig rig, I get 75C max with HT on. It may be your cooler. I went from a NH-U12P to a NH-D14 and my load temps went down 16C.

when i had my wc setup i went to 4ghz and with prime95 the temps were around 63 at max, h70 should handle 4.2 fine imo.
