As Kush said. Vlan over VPN. Depending on your routers you both have. Might be able to set it up on them.

I checked out that LogMeIn site. Won't connecting through that use up some of my cap? That's one thing I hate about this country...capped internet accounts.

Well yea, it would use your internet connection, so it would be against your cap, however you never mentioned that you didn't want to use your internet.

If that's the case, and he lives directly below you. I'd just grab a couple of Dual-band N WAP's and build yourself a robust wireless network that you both have credentials to. Or if you can then just run an ethernet cable from his router, to either direct to your machine or to a switch then your machine.

I get you, but how do we block each other from using the other's internet connection while at the same time having network access to shared folders? For example if I download patches on my dsl line it would affect his gaming and vice versa.

Forgive my lack of knowledge in this regard...I'm a modder, not a net tech.

If you want a fast solution (VPN might be slow) you'll have to grab a router. Not the home DLS/Cable routers people usually think of when they hear router, but a real router like what Cisco makes. You can link your LANs together through the router. You'll have to fiddle with custom routes and it's probably more expensive than it's worth, but it's an option.

What you would need to do is have 2 network connections (doesn't matter if wired or wireless) And have network connection 1 (your main connection) that you use have a higher priority over network connection 2. This can be done in network connections under advanced options. Then what you'll need to do is on connection 2 set a static address to an ip address within your friends network range ex: 192.168.0.5 but do not set a default gateway on it. That way it will not know how to get out to the internet, but still access local resources ie: your friends shared folders.

That makes sense. I have dual LAN ports on my motherboard. So I can easily set that up then without needing to buy any extra hardware.

Great, however you will need to be aware of one issue that you may run into, and that is: If you both have the same network range ie: 192.168.1.X then it will cause issues for you, they need to be on separate networks or at minimum a different subnet. However I suggest just changing the network address as that's easier.

So have your network as 192.168.1.X range and then have his network as 192.168.0.X That way your pc doesn't get confused on what network to try to access.

And as I was thinking about this situation, you can add a gateway to network adapter that is on your friends network just make sure your connection (connection 1) has precedence over connection 2.

Here is instructions on how to set network adapter priority for Win7:

1. Click the Start Button
2. Right Click "Network" and then left Click Properties
3. From the "Network And Sharing Center" window click "Change Adapter Settings"
4. On the "Network Connections" window, press the ALT key on your keyboard to being up the menu bar
5. Click the "Advanced" menu and then "Advanced Settings"
6. In the "Advanced Settings" window you will see the "Adapters and Bindings" tab and under "Connections" you will see the order they are in, you can use the arrows to the side to move the connection priority up and down.

It will still connect all connections, unless you tell it to disable them....but at least traffic will go over the connection 1 over connection 2.

Grab an N router that you both know the password to, then both of you grab 2 usb wifi N adapters to plug into, you can then either disable the "internet network adapters" in network connections and use solely the new wifi adapters to communicate and send files and share just to be sure you don't use eachother's internet, or you can have both enabled but specify which adapter to use when transfering files or sharing so you don't ruin your cap.
