How does voltage(low or too high) affect your GPU behaviour?

Hi there!

1) I am wondering which are the symptoms of using a lower voltage value than the one required, for example the card might require 1000mV for a certain core clock and you only provide 975mV?

2) The same question applies for overvoltage, let's take the same card and assume it requires 1000mV for 900MHz core but you apply a 1050mV voltage to the card, if the card won't die and it can handle the voltage will you notice any symptoms at all?

Increased heat is usually the effect of raising the voltage. Lower voltage in general could affect the stablity of the GPU. The same with a GPU as well. You increase the voltage to help an unstable processor but mind the tempratures. Just a very genralized explanation

So if the GPU stops responding while playing a game (black screen, but you can alt tab to windows and close the game), could it be a symptom of undervoltage?

100% Correct. With GTX4XX Heat did not effect them as much. My GTX470 would operate @ 100C just fine with 1.087v and it sure needed that much. You need to add more voltage.

Yep, too little voltage = driver crash, black screen, lockups, etc. Too much voltage will cause lower performance and more heat. You want the lowest voltage you can have stable at your OC to get the best performance and least heat generated.

CAN anyone explain why increasing the voltage makes my driver stop responding?The more I overvolt the less stable it is.My card is RADEON 9550.I know it is old but it gives you much better ocabiliy compared to new cards with locked values.PLZ HELP

old post but if you still have that card and hopefully didnt fry it its because your card isnt made to stand that extra voltage, are you at least trying to increase the core clock? or memory clock or both?

otherwise the extra voltage that isnt being used is just wasteful and hurts the card. if you are overclocking then try without increasing the voltage, play a game while your at it and look for graphical anomalies or artifacts and things that "shouldnt be there."

once you see something that shouldnt be there just pull back on the clock speeds. Also make sure you increase clock speeds by small increments of 10-15
when you do notice that weirdness on screen and you pull the clock speeds back, increase the voltage
now i dont know anything about voltage because i looked at video tutorials and they never really spoke about that mad.gif
just overclock as much as your unique piece of silicon can handle without voltage changes. Everybodys card is different like they say, its the silicon lottery

clock till you drop, then pull back on the spot
by 10-15 every time it gets hot.

actually i made that up except for the lottery part. smile.gif
