thermalight silver arrow vs corsiar h100 cooler

Thread Starter
I can't decide between these 2 for overclocking my i7 920 cpu. The silver arrow is huge and will cause me to take the heat spreaders off the corsair dominator ram. This will be going into a new haf-x 942 case with, cool master 1200 watt psu, asus rampage mother board. I am saving up now to get the case, ram and bigger hdd. I am just wondering what will be the best solution? i will have all this in 2-3 months time. I was even thinking about the thermalight ventus cpu cooler for mild over clocking.

I would go for a h100 if i can suffer the inflated price for its performance or just want a clean look. Considered going a Rasa kit route?

D14 and h100 perform exactly the same accordiing to the benchmarks i have seen.

D14 if your budget conscious. The heat spreader on the corsair domintors are for looks unless your clocking them at 1800+ with tight timing.

Well, how can we help you if you dont tell us what your preferences are?

If you dont want to remove the heatspreaders off your ram, then obviously you shouldnt buy the SA.
If you want your System to be relatively quiet than you should get the Silver Arrow.
At full fan speed the h100 might cool a bit better by a few degrees, but it's also WAY louder.
At the same noise level the SA performs better.
Basically both will allow you big Overclocks, and if you really want to push your CPU to the limit you should get a real water cooling setup anyway:

And why do you need a 1200W PSU? lol

Yes i will be sli ing later and more.

hmmmm i dont think i will be overclocking my ram to much so i wouldn't need the heat spreaders, silver would do. I do like the h100 because its clean looking and doesn't take up a lot of room. I can't decide. Someone decide for me lol.

Silver Arrow costs less, cools equally as well, and is quieter.

H100 with good quiet fans (AP-14s or similar) will destroy both the Silver Arrow and NH-D14 for a price.

I went from NH-D14 with the stock 140mm and an AP-15 pushing to a H100 with 3 AP-14s and one AP-15 (only had one from NH-D14) and the H100 beat it out by 5c. Still quiet and doesn't block half my motherboard.

Also dropped the temps on my top 580 by 5c as there is less ambient heat swirling about the case.

I mean yeah I'm using about $60 worth of fans but that's because I already had them. You don't have to use high price fans but they do help with noise/performance.

I see no advantage to these self contained water kits until they can make them perform quietly.

You have 4 fans on the H100?

Yes.

Unfair I know. But still. Adding a third fan to the NH-D14 would have netted at most 2c off the temps. Adding two more lower RPM fans (AP-14s are 1450RPM, AP-15s are 1850RPM) to the H100 netted a 5c off a cooler that would normally be neck and neck with the NH-D14 when the H100 is using the 2500 RPM fans.

I honestly am very impressed with the H100 over my NH-D14. More room to work in the case and it lets me see my beautiful motherboard.

$180 for an H100 with 4 good fans...why wouldn't you go with real water cooling at that point?

The H100 with 4 Gentle Typhoons beat the D14 with the stock 140mm and an AP15 by 5C. If you added a 3rd fan to the D14(to even things out a little) it would have probably dropped the temps with the D14 another 2C. So for about $70 more(2 AP-15s @ $15 each and the difference between D14 and H100 @ $40) you would drop 3C, doesn't seem like a good deal to me.
