This is 100% correct. In game SLI will never double your video card specs.
AFR, Alternate Frame Rendering
While one gpu is rendering the other is pre-rendering, off loading some of the work the primary gpu has to do.

The thing to remember is SLI was invented for AA/AS (pretty), not performance.
Although performance was a natural w/ the off loading of the work. It is usually about 1/3 or 30%.
So your favorite game w 1 video card = 100FPS add another video card and you will be aprox 130fps.

The first thing you need to know is what is the max amount of ram for your board. Ram is ram is doesn't matter if it video or system. You dont want to go over (including vram) the max. Doing so will slow your computer down.

yeah well, or in this case, will it get me from 45 frames, to 60 frames. I've looked at detailed benches on a 580 SLI, and the performance is exactly where I want to be

I love my SLI 580s they will crush anything I throw at them! You wont be sorry you got them.

Sli you only get as much as each card has to 1.5Vram will be what you have max it does not add together.
The beta used over 1.2gb of vram - fact
vram leak? Do you work for Dice? No. Your making stuff up...

YOU should learn your terms. There is no such thing as future proof in this blog unless you are talking about furniture or something like that. for me 1 year is not future proof.

Don't know where you got your info, but your estimates are way off. I started seeing 80-95% fps increase in all my games when I added a second GTX 570.

If you are only seeing a 30% improvement, either the game is coded poorly or you are CPU bottlenecked.

Im also looking at getting two GTX 580 3gb phantoms, I'll be gaming on one 24" 1080p monitor. Is that too much (6gb) or should I get two 1.5gb cards with higher speeds?

If you've read any part of this thread you should know that SLI/Crossfire does not stack the amount of VRAM...

Rather than getting 2x 580s, why not pick up a GTX590 for 1 monitor?

Because I'll be getting one now and adding another later on.
So if i get two 3gb phantoms it'll only use 3gb's not 6.
