How long do to keep your parts? - Page 5

I keep all my parts. My old comp is running Folding@Home with an 8800GT. I upgrade every 1.5 (partial upgrade) to 3 (new build) years. I generally keep the old parts working in some fashion. I hate to have any functioning hardware from the last ~5 years that isn't being used. It's a waste. Donate your old stuff to protein folding.

desktop rig in my profile (primary computer I use at home, serves as my gaming rig) is from 2007-2008ish. Only major change over time is video card:

x1950pro --> HD4670 --> HD5750

Still rockin' WinXP.

If it were literally the only computer I ever use (keep in mind, I have a more recent personal laptop, an HTPC in the living room, and also a laptop from work), I imagine I'd upgrade the desktop more frequently. Perhaps every couple of years.

Depends on the part. DDR3 I am holding on until the prices go up.

I've sold a lot of SB parts this year as well as AMD stuff. I rarely hold onto a new build for more than 2-3 months at a time. When new technology comes about, your older hardware beings to drop in value significantly*.

*varies with the type of computer component

I've been from a 1055t prebuilt ibuypower to a 1090t 990xa-ud3 to my Sig rig since joining OCN about 6 or 8 months ago. I'm very happy with what I've got finally, but doubt ill be able to resist ivy bridge.

It's kind of a "continual process" in one way or another. The last gpu's I bought, (8800gts320) I kept since Crysis first came out. 2 years ago, I upgraded to a dual core athlon. Last year newer mobo, psu. This year, quad core, 3 new gpu's, SSD, etc. It's never a "I'm buying a new rig" type of thing. I've only owned 2 cases since 2000. Gpu's in chronological order:

voodoo2 sli
voodoo3
GeForce MX 200 32Mb
GeForce 2 Ultra
Radeon 9800 Pro
nVidia 8800gts sli
nVidia 560Ti sli

cpu's:
33Mhz (don't remember model)
Pentium Pro 200
Athlon Thunderbird 1100
Athlon 3000
Athlon X2 5800
Phenom X4 980

This isn't counting the commodore64 or the TRS80 or the Apples (which belong in the same grouping!)
It's been a fun ride, and looks to be getting even better with time! Glad I was here to see it all unfold, hope to see much much more.

Desktops, every 5 years
Laptops, every 3 years

Current Desktops:

AMD
Athlon 4000+ @ 2.42Ghz
2GB Crucial Ballistix DDR2 1066Mhz
320GB SG Barracuda
ATI HD4670 512MB
Gigabyte M61SME-S2
500W ColoriT PSU

Intel
Core2Duo E6300 @ 2.43Ghz
2GB Crucial Ballistix DDR2 1066Mhz
320GB Hitachi Desktar
ATI HD4670 1GB
Asus P5KPL-AM
CM RealPower 520W

On a sidenote, I used them for an Intel v AMD video for YT and just left them at matched speeds to see what was better, turns out it's Intel.

Anyway, currently upgrading from the Intel system I used mostly before to this..

i5 2500K
8GB Corsair Vengeance 1600Mhz
2x 120GB Agility 3 SSD, 2x 2TB WD Caviar Blue
<Waiting for NV 600 series> I'm gonna use an EVGA 8800GTS G92 OC Edition until 600 series is out
Asus P8P67 Deluxe
Corsair TX 750W

I dont upgrade like crazy, I just build systems to last me for a while.

The last system that died on me was this.. It died about 3 weeks ago..

Q8400
4GB Crucial Ballistix 1066Mhz
1,700GB~ various HDD's
HD4890
Asus P5Q Deluxe
Seasonic 650W

R.I.P you piece of ****

Oh and the 8800 is running Crysis 2 at 40FPS on Extreme settings @ 1680x1050.. so how is the Cry3Engine good?.. hmm.

ALSO.. I have a veritable mountain of old pc parts, stacks of motherboards and about 16 various CPUs ranging from old x86's to a pentium d extreme. I dont evcer get rid of any parts.. so to answer the OP.. FOREVER.
