infact, they said the opposite, and say they will continue to provide support.

You have to read between the lines...
1) HP is considering selling off/spinning off consumer product group.
2) No future hardware will be using WebOS. How do you an OS without hardware?
3) HP downsized the WebOS team.
Once again...

yes, but they still released this update, and the user i quoted was confused because he thought they had "dumped" webOS. Implying they would no longer support it.

They're obviously still supporting it and if any takers come along to buy it they will support it into the indefinite future. I think HTC would be a great WebOS partner going forward (though there's no indication that they are interested)...

Why would anyone be interested in WebOS? Even the creators of it have no plans of developing it much more.

RIM already have their OS and moving towards Android support.
Apple have their iOS.
Microsoft has Windows Phone and will have W8.
Android is Android.

This is most likely the final update.... this update probably has been in development for a few months and just finished up QA. Over 500 of WebOS support were fired last month and the lead developers went to Google last year.

Because the Android market is quickly saturating and a company like HTC could do very well melding their "Sense" UI with something proprietary like WebOS that would eliminate any competition on the same platform....

Already updated to CM7 Alpha...NEVER going back to WebOS. Using WebOS made me want to chuck my Touchpad out the window every 10 minutes. It's actually worth using now that CM7 has been ported to it.
