Asrock easy overclocking nonsense

Thread Starter
1st time trying to overclock anything. I've downloaded the latest bios and gone into cpu config in that. The overclocking options are limited to say the least. Basically I can change the spu frequency or the pci-e frequency...and that's it. I did some looking about and saw that 250mhz was a good starter frequency plus I have a 12x multiplier (I think) so 12x250 = 3ghz?

Anyway I got up to 3ghz. 3.01ghz to be exact.....then I got a blue screen crash so i've just reverted nack to auto for now in the hope that someone can tell me what went wrong?

Is it worth me messing around with the e4600 in my machine or should I just buy a e8400 as I am planning to do?

Did you build your computer yourself or did you buy a branded box? (HP, Compaq, Dell etc.) If you bought a branded PC they usually severly cripple the bios so you can hardly adjust anything.

Also you got a BSOD most likely because you didn't adjust the voltage when you turned the frequency up so it BSOD'd from lack of voltage. Next time it BSODs try and see if you can catch the BSOD code, this will be near the bottom of the BSOD and it'll be something like 0x0000000101 or 0x0000000124 or similar. Post up the code and we can diagnose the likely cause of the BSOD.

bought it already built from a website called arbico.co.uk

ok so set it back to 250mhz hoping for a blue screen and then get the code

as I say, the options given for overclcoking are so limited. literally 2 settings to change!

oh and should I use sync or async?

like I say. Is it worth me bothering with overclocking when in truth i'll probably just get an e8400 within the next few weeks. I only really want to overclock so I can rinse as much out of my cpu as I can for battlefield 3

0x124 BSOD is usually related not enough VTT, for a x58 it's the QPI/DRAM core voltage I'm not sure what the equivalent is for your chipset.

If you're just gonna get an E8400 soon I wouldn't bother with tweaking the current one. Although you can always play around with the settings knowing that if you did somehow cook this chip you've got another one coming.

Also are you using the stock intel cooler? If you're gonna be pushing the E8400 it'll pay for you to get a better cooler so you can keep the temperature under control.

thanks for the help. Think i'll leave it for now and just get the e8400 when I can find a good deal. If bf3 runs well with that in my current setup then i'll just keep it all as it should be until I get round to needing a whole new pc in a year or so I expect

Set to async and keep your pcie at 100. Generally on that chipset you may not need to up the pcie until much higher bus frequencies.

Your chipset should be stable AT LEAST up until 333FSB~

I would:

1: SET Ratio CMOS setting to 6

2: FSB to 333. <-- start testing stability right here.

3: Up multi by 1 everytime you test stable.

Also with your board... I would look into BSEL Landing mods.
