Need RAM help - OC stable except RAM errors

I need some help before I snap.. had to quit last night it was driving me mad.

To give you some background info, this is my 1st attempt at overclocking and after a few days of messing around I have found my setup likes the FSB left on Auto, so I dropped both the HT Link & NB multis down to x8 (1600mhz) and put the RAM on lowest settings with very loose timings (11-11-11-39) and started upping the CPU multi and got to 4ghz with the vcore at the max I was comfortable to do on this board (1.450v) ran 20runs intelburn a few times then Prime 95 for 10 hours with no errors, the max temp did hit 53c so I backed it down to 3.9ghz(@ 1.425v) and tested again, all good max temps 49c.

Then we get to last night, I started with the NB multi and slowly work up to 3ghz, ran a few test but couldn’t get it stable no matter the voltage (tried all the way to 1.450v) so settled on 2.8ghz @ 1.325v which passed 20runs of intelburn.

Next put the HT back to default 2ghz ran a fast 5run Intenburn just in case. Success!

Now to fix that RAM, (2x4gb G Skull DDR3 – default 1600 8-8-8-24 @1.5v) I first set the voltage from auto to 1.5v. put them at 1333mhz and kept tightening the timings until it wouldn’t load into windows, tightest timings that loaded were 7-6-5-18-T1 @ 1.525v. This is where the fun begun… ran MemTest (http://hcidesign.com/memtest/) and it failed in about 10secs, ramped up the voltage to 1.6v and tested but no good, back off timing, tested, failed, back off & tested all the way to default, failed every time, then tested all the way to 12-12-12-40-T2 @1.5v and still it failed. Lastly I started dropping the NB and tested all the way to default and it failed all the way. That was it I had enough, turned her off, swore a bit & went to bed.

I needed to run more then one instance of MemTest and I did notice every time is was only one instance of the program that recorded errors and all the rest were perfect, if I turned that one instance off I never got another error, turn it back on and errors started again (Maybe because I got closer to using all the ram.. I don’t know) I tried running 2, 3, 4 & 6 MemTest at a time, same thing each time.

So I have come to the conclusion that I should be using something other the MemTest or (and more likely) I did sometime wrong…. If anyone has any advise it would be appreciated.

It's good that you are using multiple instances of HCI memtest, as this puts a multi-threaded load on the memory and can reveal errors you would not otherwise find. Switching stress tests won't help you. The purpose of a stress test is to find problems, not convince you there aren't any on an unstable system. Personally I'd be running six instances of HCI memtest using about 1024MiB of memory each, on that setup.

The only issue I can see where the test it self would be at fault is if you were telling to use more memory than was reliably available, causing swapping and hence timeouts.

Anyway, regarding your error, it's likely related to subtimings being too tight. Try 1333 8-8-8-25-T2 for your primary timings, then increase tRC to around 40, tRFC to around 160, tRRD to 6, and tRTP to 6.

A pass of the bootable Memtest86+ might not be such a bad idea either. It's not as stressful, but since it uses virtually all memory, it will find RAM that is outright defective more reliably.

Thanks Blameless.

I have reset everything back to default and tested the RAM with MemTest again and am getting no errors, so it was my overzealous OC attempt.

I'm now testing at 3.8Ghz @ 1.425v, CPU-NB 2.8Ghz @ 1.425v and default RAM with voltage at 1.5v instead of auto. I'm sure i can drop the voltage on the CPU & CPU-NB but will keep it here for now. I'll give P95 another 20mins on blend then try those timings - 1333 8-8-8-25-T2.

Will also try Memtest86+ if i can find a USB stick or blank CD

Ok, 1333 8-8-8-25-T2 tRC 40, tRFC 160, tRRD 6 and tRTP 6 worked.
now testing 1333 7-7-7-21 T2 still on 1.5v. but the auto settings for tRC, tRRD & tRTP are all lower then your suggestion, if i knock them down 1-2 each am I likely to see any real world performance?

Not likely, only in benching, and marginally.
