Gtx 480 -> hd 6950

Thread Starter
Do you think someone would trade a HD 6950 for a GTX 480? The 480 outperforms it but the 6950 is significantly better in terms of heat/power draw. I ask because with Christmas coming up, and with 480s being hard as hell to find new under $300, I was thinking about asking for a 6950 and then trading my 480 for a 6950 and going Crossfire.

I know a single card solution is preferable but my only other alternative is ask for cash (~$250) for Christmas instead and sell my 480 for roughly $220. Puts me in the realm of a 580, but that isn't enough of a performance boost to justify all that money imo. Pretty sure a 6950 CF would woop a 580.

Also, just curious but you guys think a 6950 CF setup would be good on my PSU (refer to sig rig)? Keep in mind I'm gonna be unlocking them and overclocking as well.

Your PSU will fine. I ran a pair of 6950's with mine.

And yes, someone would trade. Including me.

Hmmm.. I might be in on this.. if you throw cash on top. Its a referance model so its basically a 6970. & Yes your PSU has plenty of power for 6950's CF.

*also I think you need more rep in order to post stuff for sale/trade, but i'm not 100% sure*

Anyways lemme know what you think & GLWT!

Your PSU is fine.
With 1 monitor I'd recommend getting the best single gpu solution you can afford.
To be honest your current GPU is just fine, unless you're trying to play modern games on max/near max settings.

Save your money and wait on 22nm process GPUs

Otherwise, I'm sure people would be interested in the trade you mention.

AFAIK you need 35 rep in order to post a wanted/for sale thread, but not to participate in the market. I could be wrong though, I don't go there often.

I wouldn't really want to add cash on top of the 480 considering it outperforms the 6950 and is cheaper to begin with :/

Btw guys not really looking to have this turn into a trading place, was just curious if there would be interest

Just judging by the BF3 Beta, I'm not really happy with the performance it offers. I was only averaging like 40-45 FPS with a mix of high/ultra. It's perfectly playable but I would like to completely max it, which I have confidence CF 6950s would do very well . As it is right now I was getting a measly 20-25 FPS average with all settings ultra 4xAA etc.

Also can't max Shogun 2 with it, another favorite of mine. Takes me into the teens FPS-wise lol. Plus I really don't like the heat and power consumption. Makes my room feel like a toaster.

Not saying I'd trust AnandTech with my life or anything, but according to this the 480 beats it in the majority of benchmarks. IMO if these figures ARE accurate, I'd be doing the person a favor with the only drawback being more heat/power.

edit: crap forgot the link: http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/293?vs=309

I would not if GTX480 is on air. I had many people request a Trade with their GTX480 for my unlocked HD 6950 when i had it for sale locally.

A 480 for a locked 6950 would be an easy trade (and a slight downgrade), but unlocked... that might be a tougher pitch. If you don't mind running locked 6950s, then the move should be fairly simple.

Otherwise I think you'd have an easier time just selling the 480 and putting that money towards another 6950.

Still, if you're worried about heat/power draw from a single 480, dual 6950s will be worse, and if you're playing on a single 60hz, 1080p screen, you likely won't see an appreciable difference in most games, despite the 6950s being much faster.
