Is Canon L/Nikon Gold ring lenses woth it? - Page 2

Canon's 'L' lineup is for people who:

A. Have money
B. Use their gear to make money
or
B2. Buy for the red ring male enhancement
C. Need the build quality
D. Need weather sealing (where appliucable)
E. Need the best image quality and reliability to fulfill point B

Basically, buy L if you need the benefits the line offers.

17-40L reviews are always way harsh on this. It's not bad except at 17mm and f/4, and is solved by framing loose and cropping ever so slightly. It's a minor issue that can be worked around, and saves you a whole lot of money over the 16-35L. I've been using it on film for quite some time now, and sans cropping I'm still ok with most images at 8x10.

Well, I don't shoot to earn an income (the odd paid shoot not withstanding), nor am trying to compensate for any "shortcoming." So how do I factor in? Could it be that I just want the best IQ possible, regardless of what I do or others may think? rolleyes.gif

And I agree about the 17-40 being worth it over the 16-35. The corner sharpness issue is bad really only wide open, so for a landscape lens it's not a huge issue.

Don't roll your eyes at me, DAD. You fit bracket A -- have money. It's not a necessity, but you can afford it. Maybe it should read "have money and can appreciate a good product".

tongue.gif Maybe Canon should release Ferrari editions of their L lenses, all red with extra-red rings. Now that would be the ultimate phallic proxy.

I cannot put into words how much I hate that thing. It's pretty much the pinnacle of camera e-peen, and isn't is just an H40 that's painted red? Dumb.

i prefer the "gold ring" lens for the superior build quality and durability as well as picture quality. i use my 12-24mm f/4 for real estate. the quality in pictures i get is almost 99% better than all the pictures done by the greater las vegas association of realtors.. it helps our properties rent fast.. as well as help investors who dont live here get a really detailed idea of how everything looks without being there themselves.

tho i do not in anyway knock my 18-105 as that lens have given me quite a bunch of nice pictures.

in most cases, its just what you need...

i love both my lenses.. and soon to acquire another gold ring (24-70) tho i think in most cases, the "gold ring" will mean those non-gold ring lenses are "restrictive".. for me, i need the faster shutter speed with zoom.. f/2.8 lenses xD

in no way does acquiring a red ring/gold ring lens mean it will automatically give you a better picture, but for those who are more experienced, its makes their job a bit easier to get the better picture..
