ATi Physics?

So i was looking at the 4860 i got my wife and saw that its physics capable?

Thought only nVidias could do that?

Would it be worth it to x-fire with 2 4890's?

or you could get a radeon 6870 for much cheaper, and get the same performance with dx11

If you are talking about PhysX, that's exclusive to Nvidia cards. You can run hybrid configuration if you like, where AMD as main rendering and Nvidia card as a dedicated PhysX. This is a very simple 3 steps setup (install Forceware 258.96, install PhysX SS-514, run PhysX patch and done).

Physics in game is processed by CPU, excepts games with PhysX hardware acceleration will benefit having a dedicated PhysX card. If not, PhysX will be processed by CPU. When this happens, games with PhysX enabled will hit the performance hard without dedicated PhysX (PPU).

2 4890s? Yes, there will always boost the frame rates. Not sure for 48xx, but for 58xx, going from 1 to 2 cards the boost is 65-85%.

I think that was around when Ageia was still separate from Nvidia. Both Nvidia and ATI had some sort of Physics processing to "compete" with Ageia.

It's probably useless today.

IIRC ATi used to havre their own verson of physx but no games ever used it.

even modern games don't really use the verson of physx thats ran on nvidia cards.

AMD cards process games Bullet physics, Havok and all forms of physics engine except Nvidia PhysX.
