If there routed behind a desk then it should be ok, but you have curious kids around it maynot be a good idea

So I'm thinking about going over to the FS section and picking up some parts. Here's what I have so far:

Some kind of core 2 duo (need help on this) ~$50-$100?
Gtx 460 ~$100
Corsair 500w from Newegg ~$60
320Gb WD ~$40
Some cheap case ~$50
I have 2gb of cheap DDR2 ram
I have a Dell mATX motherboard from my Inspiron 530

So what I'm wondering is, if I should buy a higher model core 2 duo (like an e8400) and use it with my current motherboard (which I can't OC on), or buy a lower model core 2 duo and use the extra money for a motherboard that I can OC on. Also, will a core 2 duo (at somewhere around 3Ghz) and a gtx 460 have a bottleneck somewhere? I'm kind of leaning toward the "buy a faster stock cpu" option so that I don't have to worry about OCing and crashes.
If this was my friend, I would tell him to wait to save up atleast $100-$150 more. So he can get an i3 system. Or I would get him an i3 system and tell him we will buy him a GPU later... Like this:

Get 4GB of ram, it is cheap enough anyways. You can also try getting these parts used, to try and save your friend a few bucks. In reality an i3-2100 build is going to the best thing he can come up with, it will be very fast too. A C2D with DDR2 just wont be worth it right now. Yes a C2D is nice but Sandy bridge is so much better.

Well now I'm thinking about getting an 1156 core i3 and a cheap overclockable motherboard from newegg and overclocking it. Any thoughts?

Are you near a Microcenter? You could pick up the Phenom II X4 840 for $60, or buy a new AM3 cpu and get a motherboard for free or $40 off any other mobo. Great deal.

But I would strongly suggest the wanted/for sale section here. I am currently in the process of buying cheap components. So far I obtained:

PHIIX4 840 (from MC): $60
AM3 mobo (used): $40
8GB GSkill 1333 (new): $30
500w Antec PSU (used): $30
NZXT Source 210 Case (Newegg, new): $40
80GB HDD (eBay, used): $7
GTX 460 (lightly used): $75!
Scythe Mugen 2 CPU Cooler: $30

Total Spent: $312

Easily obtained if you take your time and just buy the deals when they come

Tell him to sell his Xbox and the games at a decent price and use the rest of the money to build a good gaming PC
