Intel gaming build - SB-E or IB?

Thread Starter
Hi all,

I am going Intel before the year is over and I need a small suggestion. Does anyone see Sandy Bridge-E being better for gaming then Ivy Bridge? If not, would it be a good idea building now with a 2500k and a P67 board? This way I would have a clear upgrade path for Ivy Bridge if I choose to upgrade? I don't plan on overclocking very much.

Thanks

IB won't be out until 2012, just get a 2500k.

SB-E is going to be better for gaming than IB.

SB-E is replacing 1366 while SB is replacing the current SB.

If you don't want to throw down the cold hard cash for an SB-E setup, which isn't going to be cheap, then just go with a 2500K, it won't disappoint

SB-E is going to be great, but keep in mind that IVB is going to be running on Tri-gate 3D Transistors which will bring gains in both power efficency/thermals as well as performance. SB-E is based on the same core, with tweaks to the Uncore, improving performance.

In the Toms article SB-E was on pair with LGA 1155, so no, it wont be better then IB, (for gaming) as long as you don't use more then 2 high end cards, and have cpu oc past 4.5Ghz, the CPUS atm are more then enoguh for any game, if you dont go for crazy 3 sli/crossfire setups, in that case SB-E would prolly pull ahead.

SB-E won't be better for games unless you are going TRI/Quad-SLi and plan to game at 7680x1600, as this is where the extra PCIe lanes will become useful (SB-E has 40).

Your GPU(s) will bottleneck your FPS in games far before a moderately clocked 2500k will.

For gaming? SB (not SB-E) now or IB later.

If you have some serious work to do, like to fold etc. then SB-E.
