Folding 2 GPUs, issues

Thread Starter
OK, one of my rigs died the other day, so I pulled the Zotac GTX460 out of it and threw it in the second slot in my SigRig, jumpered a second PSU to power it and started folding it in my SigRig along with the Asus GTX460 that I've always folded. Well, first off my OCs won't stay stable on either card and on top of that my PPD with both is just barely more than with the Asus. I have a couple of questions...

1. Why can't I get the OCs stable (anything above stock seems to become unstable and cause WUs to fail)?

2. Why has my PPD dropped from 11-12K on each card to 13K for both? Does a 150MHz OC really make THAT much difference??

3. My temps on both have jumped dramtically (running at stock clock/stock voltage and temps are as high as when each was OCed with higher voltages)??

Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated. At this point, I'm thinking of just pulling the Zotac and shelving it until I can get another rig to run it, but I hate having it lying around not folding!

Thanks!

Are you folding on your 2500k at the same time as the 2 GPUs? It could be possible that the GPUs aren't getting the CPU resources they need in order to fold the particular WUs. <- someone correct me if I'm wrong though.

Which client are you using? Are the cards in SLI while folding?

You technically can fold while SLI but I recommend not doing it. Also the drivers for nvidia that should be used is the 266 version. You also may need a dummy plug (or second monitor). I have my GPUs (GTX 460s) at 830MHz.

To answer each of the above questions...

1. I am using the FAH GPU Tracker V2 client to fold the GPUs and I have my 2500k folding in a VM Ubuntu Client.

2. The cards are not in SLI, just each folding on their own.

3. I have 2 monitors, one hooked up to each GPU so I don't need a dummy plug.

Also, I reset both cards to stock clock/voltage last night, shut down the system and rebooted and this morning thigns seem to be working better. Yesterday I was showing about 9k PPD on the Zotac card and 4K PPD on the Asus, but now the Asus is showing 8k PPD and the Zotac is showing 9k, so this seems more normalized and more what I expect from the cards at stock.

Now my next question is, why can't I seem to OC the cards with both running in one system? When they were each in separate systems, they both OCed well (900MHz for the Asus and 850MHz for the Zotac)? Thanks again for the help and the suggestions!

Can't help on the gpu Overclock, but if you are folding in that VM on all threads, you might want to drop it down at least one. Do -smp 7, and see if that helps. But it's a trade off, as it will drop your ppd on your smp folding.

Doublecheck the clocks for both GPUs in something like Evga Precision; sounds like they might have both dropped to 2D clocks.

I use GPUz to check the clocks, it seems to work fine, however...

I was thinking about it on the way to work and realized why I can't get a stable OC (and I felt kinda dumb that it took me this long): heat. When I had each GPU in a separate system, the temps while OCed were 75C for the Asus and 85C for the Zotac, now I'm seeing close to those temps at the stock speeds and I know why... The Zotac board has always run hot, the temps radiating off the back of the board are dumping right into the fan on the Asus and causing it to run hotter than when there was nothing in front of it. Looking at it, the Zotac board is running at about 77C right now, so i can probably OC it a little (since it has always run fine at 85C), but the Asus is going to have to stay stock.

Sorry for the useless post, and thanks for all your help!
