1 powerful card or 2 in sli/crossfire? - Page 5

Is this primarily a gaming rig? Or do you do some other heavy duty creation/media work on this rig also? Reason I ask is, the 2600K and 16GB of memory will be wasted on a gaming rig.

IMO, 2 less powerful cards in SLI/CF, since your getting better performance for often the same price or less, so long as you have a power supply, motherboard and adequate space/airflow in your case.

Microstuttering can be an issue, but both AMD and Nvidia are pretty good with it.

If not, buying a more powerful card now and SLI/CF-ing that gpu in the future is also a good idea

Save yourself the cash and snag a 2500K instead of the 2600K. The price difference here is not going to translate to a useful difference in performance. Hyperthreading is great because it can help load cores more heavily when many threads are demanding a lot of attention. In the case of creation apps, the apps will create as many threads as they see logical cores, and the result is a boost in performance because 8 or more threads are being "force-fed" across 4 cores with a precision hammer. In those circumstances, the i7 is able to do more work per cycle.
In your case, with gaming being the priority, and media work being a secondary, the 2500K is the better value. You're still going to get incredible performance in media apps. The 16GB RAM may be a worthwhile route since RAM is so cheap anyways, and if you run out of RAM while video editing, it doesn't matter how much CPU you have, you're going to bottle at your HD, which is a terrible thing to consider.

2 cards definitly.

And all the people who are saying "two cards have microstutter!!!" they dont even understand what it is...cos 1 card has microstutter , so does two cards and so does 3 cards.....

microstutter is always present!!!

Disadvantages of two cards over a single equaliy priced card is :

Power draw
Heat
Space

I've had both Xfire and SLI and both worked well. I decided with my most currently build (Sig) that i'd go with the single fastest GPU, GTX 580 and it's been more than good enough. When it start to lag a bit i'll grab a 2nd .

But for now 1 is more than enough!

So then whats the difference between the 2? Other then price does one OC better then the other? Just want to know more before i decide is all.
