New CPU or GPU?

Thread Starter
Rig in Sig.

Currently I am considering investing in a new Processor or Graphicscard, however I dont know which I should go with first.

I am on a very tight budget atm so I can only choose one.

The thing is it feels like my 5850 does not deliver as it should, usual GPU load is around 50-60% in most games and the fan is starting to fail (had the gpu for 2 years and warranty ran out months ago) the fan makes alot of odd noise when the PC has been turned off for quite a while, its like the smeared stuff around the fan (or inside it) gets dried up when its off, and then warms up when its on for a while. I dont know, and I really dont want to spend 50 euroes on a random cooler that forces me to remove parts of the GPU and then might bog everything up and never boot it again lol.

([ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=12A11XTVXFM[/ame] - This is very similar to the noise it makes at cold boot) It only does it once I get into windows, and slowly stops if I raise the speed, however it'll sound louder.

I get subpar performance in some games, some people claim they get 100 fps in GTA IV (stock 1.0.7.0) on maximum (not view distance) where I would only get around 45.
And I am aware GTA IV is CPU bound, but they sit on 955/965/Q6600 etc.

BFBC2 - I get around 40-50fps in 1920x1080 and mouse feels laggy as hell.
Others with GTX 560 Ti / 6870 - 90+ fps in DX9 apparently.

Not to mention I am tired of AMDs flickering screen when using a second monitor and the extra heat in idle due to 400/1000 clocks with dualmonitor.
And I cant overclock using a second monitor or it starts flickering again.

The CPU I had in mind: AMD Phenom II X6 1090T 3.2GHz Black Edition
The GPU I had in mind: Asus GeForce GTX 560Ti 1024MB DirectCU II

I am aware that my motherboard doesnt support DDR3, however Ive seen no performance gains in anything with DDR3 in benchmarks.
So if thats an issue I would then have to replace the Motherboard, RAM and CPU.

Anyone have a benchmark or chart showing how much of a bottleneck a 720 BE would be to a 560 ti or higher card compared to lets say 965 @ 4ghz or a 2500k?

i would say ur gpu is enough for now....
take a new cpu probably the one u suggested...as we have seen now that bd is a fail..i think thubans will serve quite well for some time to come.... so u can't go wrong with 1090t be....
my friend has a 1090t be n hd5850(same saphire one)....n he is very happy with his performance....n please see that all people saying they get 100fps in gta 4 with hd5850 with very high settings r to the face liars.....my friend with x6 n hd5850 gets around 50-60 fps around same as what u r getting.....n i get around 50......and i have a 3.2ghz i7....i think u get my point now.....

try sending ur gpu to sapphire itself n ask them if they can repair the fan for a minimal fee.....if they agree u don't have to buy another custom cooling solution.....
smile.gif

IMP EDIT:Make sure ur mobo supports 125 watt tdp processors n not just 95tdp ones...otherwise it could create problems with x4 9xx and x6 1xxx processors.....

okay just found out ur mobos gud to go for the x6 1090t.... smile.gif

So the CPU will not be affected by the type of RAM I am using?
I heard AMD (or was it intel?) is bandwidth dependant or something.

I will try and contact Sapphire and see what they say.

you could do with some faster RAM it would help everything else.

800mhz is DDR2 isn't it?

I would at least get 4GB of 1333mhz will deff speed everything up.

Especialy that RAM is dirt cheap at.

do one thing bro...answer this question...for how much time will u be using ur x6 n hd 5850....

if ur answer is 1 year then i suggest u to take x4 instead of x6 n save money...for gaming x6==x4.....

so put the saved money sometime in the future to change ur mobo cpu n ram combo.....

right now u r bound with ddr2 ram...n ddr3 means changing mobo...which i consider a wastage of money for now....

so ultimate advice....take an x4 n keep hd5850 n ur current ram too...use these parts for 2 years ,till then save money then jump to some new intel rig probably.......

in gaming u won't feel much lag or any low fps issues due to ur 800mhz ram until unless u r a benchmark freak n care about getting or squeezing even .5-1 fps more from ur rig.....(no offence to anybody n this comment is relative....i mean to say that even with 800mhz ram his experience in gaming won't be bad...of course its needless to say that ddr3 will fetch him a few fps more but nothing else)....

or u can get a 1066mhz ddr2 memory which will be costlier compared to ddr3....

As stated above, your on a little bit of an outdated platform being ddr2 and all. I say go for the GPU upgrade now, sell your old one to recoup some money, save for a while, then get a nice AM3+ or 1156 board + chip.
I would worry about putting a 6 core in that motherboard anyways. The MSI site does not list a TDP that the board suports, but there are no heatsinks on your vreg's....

^^ i checked putting in an x6 wont be a problem but ocing it will be a problem....and btw this is irrelevant...the best upgrade imo is a phenom 2 x4 955 be.... no use splashing more than necessary on the outdated platform...instead save for future.....
u would be fine for now iwth x4 n hd5850....

and mxthunder u r telling him to added another card and sell current...but that won't solve the purpose as his cpu is bottlenecking his current gpu......

Buying a new CPU gives me the option to buy a GPU once I can.
Then I have the option to get a new motherboard with new ram.

Or invest, in a year or two from now, in an intel or if AMD shapes up.

Go with an PII x4 955. Your GPU is plenty good enough, but since you think the fan is failing. You can always switch to Water Cooling! But, since you are on a tight budget, its not really worth it tongue.gif
