1090T temp is too high

Thread Starter
So I just received and installed a 1090T. I set it clocked to stock at 3.2GHz, vcore 1.4, turbo core off.

One thing that struck me is idle temp on boot, as reported by HWMonitor, is 40C, which I thought rather high. I ran prime95 and after just a few minutes of running the temperature goes past 60C.

I know these temps are very high. What can be causing this? Did I get a dud?

Are you looking at core or socket temp? Because if your looking at core temp then thats why they seem high, thuban has a bugged temp sensor and socket temp is more accurate.

I am going by the single temp listed in HWMonitor as CPU, which I assume is the socket temp. Under load, this temp follows the core temps very closely. This is the same temp I see under CPU if I use Asus' AI Suite II and open up to temp monitoring.

No you should NOT be looking at your socket temps. You SHOULD be looking at your core temps. Download coretemp if you haven't already and see what it says there. You do not want to go over 62C on your core temps and even that is just a safety net.

Why are you running a Vcore of 1.4 at stock? its 1.3 for a 1090T isnt it, mine can run around 1.25 stock?
Also whats your CPU/NB voltage set at as that can effect temps quite a bit too.
And yes you can look at socket temps when its Idle the core temp doesnt become anywhere close to being accurate till around the 45 degree mark anyway so for idle temps its useful to use socket temps.
And yes hitting 60 even using the socket temp at load unclocked is too high to be honest.

Good catch on the Vcore. I missed that myself. But you really do not need to look at the cpu tem, just the core temp. I have to look for it but there was a letter posted here on OCN saying the cpu temp is nothing to be worried about and they are basing their temps on the core. If I find it all post it.

Yeah I saw that letter too,but like it states somewhere in that thread the sensor is calibrated to become more accurate at higher temps so its still useful to use the socket temp when cores are below 40 odd degrees (As theres no way in hell that my cooler is making the cores go below ambient at idle). Somethings a miss with his system if hes hitting 60 socket temp at stock either way. But yeah the core temp is the one to go by when the temp gets higher in some weird uncalibrated way that they set them

Yeah, I just read it. I guess it must vary from chip to chip because my CPU TEMP is always like 60C even at idle and my core temps are always above the ambient temp. So like when it is 24c in my house (76F) my idle core temps are always around 27-29C. I posted the letter for the OP so he can read it also.

Thats really odd then, as mines showing 16c on my cores with an ambient of around 23, maybe your right with the variation on some chips then as I know a lot of people who get below ambient core temps on idle.
So they played with the calibration somewhere along the lines and I suppose in a way that makes the whole which temp to go off situation even worse for 1090Ts lol.

LOL. Yeah I know. I hadn't built a computer in like 8 years bc of just things happening in life. I was like I wonder if HWmonitor was still around. I downloaded and say my cpu temp was high I was like WHAT! lol. I did not realize how much things have changed since my older clocking days. Back then we didn't have all these corse and such. When I found that letter it brought a relived bc I was like crap I got to send this stuff back hahaha.
