Am I the only paranoid one? (re: raid)

Thread Starter
So I am close to building my first server, and I can't decide if I am going use RAID, or manually copy files over to backup hard drives. I get so paranoid that the RAID won't work, and I'll lose files.

Is it just me? Is there a program that verifies files are actually backed up?

RAID is not a backup solution, it's insurance against hardware failure.

If the RAID is working, files spread across the drives will survive the failure of at least one drive (depending on raid level, assuming you aren't using RAID 0, obviously). Nearly all RAID solutions have frimware, drivers, and/or software that will warn you if something happens, and in the absence of such warnings, you can usually assume the data on the drives is still there.

Still, you'll want different method for backup as anything that happens on the logical level, as opposed to a hardware issue, will affect even the redundant data on a RAID.

The only RAID array when you need to worry about failure is RAID0 (which is useless for servers anyway).

A RAID1, RAID5 and RAID10 Array is reliably and completely rebuild able should 1 drive fail. Multiple drives need to fail at once for the array to not be rebuild able. These RAID configurations are whats recomended for servers anyway

I have worked with raid for over 15 years. It's solid and reliable and does what it's supposed to do. One thing it is NOT is a backup system though.

RAID helps insure servers dont go down, backups (I use Veritas) help in the case of a fire, power surge, theft, what have you. Both methods are essential in running a respectable server(s).
