You most definitely can, at least in the Beta. That is, if I can trust YouTube videos. - and maybe not play it well, but in a pinch, arguably still playable. I'm just not familiar with all the lower end gpus with all the rebranding and such that goes on and which is the best bang for the buck at ~$70 range.

Yes, and minimum is 8800GT. Doesn't really help with my question tough. Recommended and min specs also don't state at what res and what fps to expect.

Definitely will do. Do you have any recommendations off the top of your head?

Yeah I can't guarentee you will get a playable game of BF3 or Skyrim.

But there are alot of better choices like:

Refurbished 4850 for ~$63
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...7BBTkwCjCECjCE

New 9800GT for $62
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...7BBTkwCjCECjCE

New 5670 for $68

There are a bunch of new GT240's for <$70 too.

Moral of the story: Don't buy a 4670. or even a 4850 (or equivalent) unless you're playing at very low resolutions.

Edit: Guess I should mention, the 4850 isn't a bad card. I've had no reason to upgrade my card up until this point where it wouldn't run BF3...this is literally the first game that it couldn't run smoothly. For any other game out though, it does just fine.

Good to know thanks, this is the kind of info I'm looking for.

Here's a video of a 5670 on Low settings, although res is also lowered to 1366x758.
Obviously, this is not ideal for most people on this site, and this is not Caspian Border, but it does look "playable" imo.
9800GT also looks promising. 1280x720p while Fraps'ing. Everything off/Low settings.

BF3:

So, go get a 8800GT, and your friend will be able to "enjoy" the lowest possible visuals in BF3/Skyim.

End of thread.

Yup, that's about their playable threshold is around that resolution, they can maintain about 30-40 FPS on low settings at or around 720p. If you're on larger monitor though (like 1440x900 or greater resolution) I'd suggest spending 30-40 more dollars and get just getting a newer entry level card like the 6850 or GTX 460, it'll make all the difference...because frankly, it looks like garbage on my 1680x1050 monitor playing at 1280x960 resolution haha, extremely fuzzy..somewhat hard to make things out. BF3 is extremely detailed, so to me, using the correct resolution for your monitor makes all the difference between seeing the guy laying down in the bush and not seeing him...if that makes any sense.

I would honestly say take a look at the used marketplace around here and pick up a 260gtx for like 60-70$, Then buy a 40$ psu (a quality one though it doesnt have to have an insane amount of watts). I wouldnt recommend a 8800gt because I am skeptical of its performance at even the lowest settings on a huge map with 64 players.

Does make sense, native res is always preferred. Not sure it is an option in this case though.

Thanks, I'll see if I can find one. Looks like even the 192sp version will be a better option than the 8800gt. Problem might now be finding a quality PSU that has 2 pci-e power connectors.

I could play the beta with my 9400 gt.
I played the Beta on a 9600gt on 720p at low settings I was getting an average of 40 FPS on both metro and Caspian.
He could go with a 9600gt and be fine on low + 720p. If he wants 1680x1050 then he needs a bigger budget for just a video card let alone a new psu also.
