6870 CF or GTX 580

Thread Starter
Does crossfire only give 20% performance and would 2x6870s be better than 1x580, and if I go with the 580 will I need to mod my mobo?

The 6870s should outperform the 580 fairly consistently. After all, SLI'd GTX 460s trade blows with a stock 580, and 6870s are even faster.

The 580 will have more VRAM though, and of course the option for more expandability down the road.

As far as modding your mobo, that's only for running SLI on boards which don't support it. For a single card, it should be plug and play.

6870s, Cheaper and faster.

"If we had to pick one of the systems from this or the original launch review as gamers, we would lean towards the GTX 580. Our reasoning? A solid gaming experience at 1920x1080, no reliance on driver profiles, low noise cooling with smooth fan speed increases and the great 3D/PhysX solution."

The 6870 CF setup will have higher fps but it will use more power and leve no upgrade capability for the future unless you buy new cards.

Since you already have one 6870 I would just get another one and CF it rather than selling it just to spend $500 on another GPU that will perform less than 2 6870's.

Benchmark here: http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/301?vs=305

don't how 6870 CF would perform, but its good

I know 6950 CF isn't much more cash than 6870 CF and it defenitly beats 580 and scales great for the most part, well over 20%, up around 80-95% in a lot of game reviews (of the common big name titles)
