New Server? Help!

Hey guys,

I'm working as an apprentice web developer, and my boss who is currently on holiday has emailed me saying that to give me a break from the website that I can write a report on what our new server will need, I think it will be a windows based server, and its for a small business, (about 12 people) and it would be a file/mail server, and I dont have a clue what it would need or anything as I've done nothing to do with servers before, so if you have any ideas on all the hardware and software and can explain it quite plainly for me then please help. Cheers.

A server of the kind you're describing is generally most affected by one of these 3 things: storage speed, RAM quantity and network speed. For 12 people likely you don't need very high requirements unless you want to run virtual machines on top. Another thing to know is what kind of downtime is acceptable? Aka if it needs to be on 100% of the time you may need things like dual-redundant PSU and generally good RAS features.

Detail a bit your requirements and we'll be able to give you a better advice. Welcome to OCN
