Can single 580 run everything on max, with physx on highest on a single 27" 1920x1080?

When Arkham Asylum first came out, I had a i7 920 and a gtx 295, and it maxed out Arkham Asylum with Physx on high... Using one of the GPU's as Physx.
Then I picked up a GTX 580 and it was a whole new world. Even Physx performed a lot better even though it's one GPU vs 2 (512 CUDA cores vs 480 on the 295)...

You shouldn't even need a 3GB card to max it out at 1080p...

If it runs anything like AA did (which I really hope it does) then one 580 should do the trick. By the way, don't waste your money on a 3GB variant, that's not intended for people who game at 1080p.

Amusingly enough I tried Batman AA and PhysX again with my HD 6950 and Athlon II. I was surprised to see 18-22fps... until I was suddenly bogged down to 5-9fps when going into a layer of smoke. In short it saddened me frown.gif

I would be fine with PhysX if Rocksteady didn't make Batman AA (Probably AC too) feel empty without the feature. I don't see why they couldn't have fake gimmicky particle effects and animated flags/etc to compensate AMD cards (Or those who have Nvidia cards that couldn't handle PhysX at the time.) Especially with the Benchmark, first time I actually ran it and thought, "Why the hell am I watching empty rooms with nothing going on right now?"

It was still a great game, and I've recently been playing it again just to recap on some stuff. I just hope Batman AC doesn't launch with a message saying something like, "You should have an Nvidia 460+ series card to play this game in DX11 and with PhysX! Your card does not meet these standards, therefor it's recommended to switch to DX9/10. Remember: Nvidia, the way it was meant to be played!"

lol, I used to run AA maxed out on ati 3870 with 1680x1050 resolution (without anti-aliasing I think) and a dual core CPU... so 580 is so overkill

Proprietary technology is bad. There are plenty of good alternatives like Bullet and Havok. If PhysX could be ran on both AMD- and Nvidia-cards I would have no problem with it, but it doesn't and it limits gamers choices.

Imagine if you bought a DVD, and when you put it in you DVD player the screen would say:
"Since your DVD-player is not Sony, this movie will only play in mono."
PhysX is that bad.

That depends really, sometimes proprietary is good and leads to high levels of control and quality. It's not ALL bad. In this case, it's not. Nvidia has only bought Ageia and hasn't done anything but enhance the software.

PhysX is a cross platform solution. Our SDKs and tools are available for the Wii, PS3, Xbox 360, the PC and even the iPhone through one of our partners. We continue to invest substantial resources into improving PhysX support on ALL platforms--not just for those supporting GPU acceleration.

Basically meaning it's up to game developers to optimize thread control for multi-core CPU. It is not nVidia's fault that game developers choose to only spend time making phsyx work with GPU and not optimize it for multi-core CPU use.

Sure, you can say otherwise. But look at this article rocksteady was quoted saying:

http://www.dsogaming.com/news/batman-arkham-city-pc-wont-support-physx-v3-0-sdk/
Quote:
Additionally, Wyatt revealed that there won’t be any exclusive hardware accelerated PhysX features. All of the physics effects will be able to run on the CPU too, meaning that Nvidia cards will only offer better performance while running them and nothing more.

Can AMD point to changes within the code that can show that performance of Physx has deteriorated on multi-core CPU if you compare pre-Nvida Ageia API versus present day Nvidia Physx API? Minus the AA test done with Batman Arkham Asylum which was quickly debunked AMD has yet to make a true, valid statement on the subject of PhysX.

Maybe they should, and If there is no deterioration, then nVidia is not in the wrong. Why would they spend resources making Physx work better on multi-core cpus. That is just a dumb business decision unless they see the value of doing so.

While were on the subject...

Wasn't PhysX was originally made with the general idea that you'd actually be using the GPU or Ageia card to free up CPU power for physics intensive processes? That's the whole reason ageia made the card anyway.

Then you have the general use of things like cuda which is GPU computing which I can see being a heavy thing working in Nvidias favor when it comes to physx processing.

Getting a 580 for one game all because of PhysX is probably the silliest thing ever.

The is the first AAA game using PhysX since... Batman:AA? Basically, not worth it getting a 580 since you already have a 6970. Besides, you can run PhysX on the CPU now with Batman:AC.

That, and he'd also get the best single chip GPU on the market

How is it not nVidia's fault when there are just as good if not better physics engines out that like Havok that can do twice as much, even on age old hardware like the PS3? On all kinds of systems? Nvidia developed an exclusive physics engine for stuff that can be done on any hardware, and is positively giving developers "incentive" like cash or advertising in exchange to using the engine. Just because the developer buys into it doesn't mean it isn't Nvidia's fault.

Good or dumb business decision, users are getting shafted because of Nvidia for money's sake. Don't just try to disregard what is being done here because of business purposes. That just makes it worse.
There is a place/time for that particular argument, and this isn't it.

I shouldn't need 3 GPUs (6990 and a 8800GT) to be able to do some "icing on the cake" physics that doesn't do much for the game itself. Oh and let's not ignore that grand Xeon Core i7 @ 4ghz - because you know, it can't possibly do flittering paper textures.
