win7 activation question?

Thread Starter
Hello all! I just recently got some hardware to replace my father's old computer, and built it all in his old tower.

The issue however is the OS. We want windows 7 on it, but the only CD we have access to is the one I got when Win7 first came out, from the student discount (win 7 pro 64bit).

My question is... can I go through the installation on the new computer's hard drive, then, when windows is running, put in a different activation code? Or is the product key used during installation the activation code, and I should instead just wait and get a new copy of the OS?

Thanks for the help

Are you trying to use a product key from an academic DVD on a standard dvd?

Im not sure what you are asking.

You dont even have to enter a key, you can enter it with in 30days of installing windows.

You should have the option of authenticating it later. That will let you get windows running and then you can authenticate it. At least that's what I've done before.

Well, the answer is maybe.

If you have a windows 7 pro disk and windows 7 pro key, it will activate fine, but the disk has to be 64bit for the system to be 64bit.

If you have windows 7 pro disk and windows 7 home premium disk, it won't work.

Also, if you have a windows 7 N series key, it definitely won't work.

So if your disk matches the key (as in pro-->pro, etc), then it will work fine.

:edit:

Just remembered:

if you have an upgrade disk, skip putting in the key during authentication, then go through the slmgr and reset it so that it allows you to put in upgrade key without a previous installation of windows.

:edit:
more details

So you installed and skipped using the key because it's an upgrade disk and it's a formatted hard drive or it's a new hard drive... so once you are done install, run regedit.exe and search for:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Setup/OOBE/
Go to Media Boot Install and change it to 0.

Then, close it and run cmd.exe as admin.
type in:
slmgr /rearm

then you restart the PC, and type in your key by going through control panel.

The activation key is the same as the product key. As long as you only have 1 computer registered to the OS then you are okay. Is this what you are asking ?

I don't think it being a student edition matters just the version

I believe so, I'm confusing myself as well

So the activation/product/serial key is one and the same. I'm currently using it on my sig rig.

If I use the same CD to install on another comp, it'll install and work fine, but I'll still need to get a new key by buying a new version? (which would be win7 pro 64bit).

I basically want to install an OS now, activate it later with a valid new copy.

You can do that. Use any CD you like to install it. You then have 30 days to activate it.

You can use the Windows 7 pro disk and purchase a product key or PK later for activation. Just remember to leave the space where you're suppose to type in the PK blank.
