Prochot# Trips Too Early (71ºC) - Q6600 @ 3.3

Thread Starter
Hi, I recently purchased a Q6600 and decided to overclock it to 3.3 GHz. Here are my Prime95-stable settings:

Vcore: 1.20625V
DRAM Voltage: 1.8V
CPU Frequency: 367x9
RAM Frequency: 735 MHz
LLC Enabled
Speedstep Enabled
C1E State Enabled
TM Function Enabled

My pertinent specs are:

MB: Asus P5QL Pro
HSF: Cooler Master Hyper TX3 (Push-Pull)
RAM: 4x1GB DDR2-667 CL5
PSU: HEC Cougar 550W 80+ Bronze

I've noticed that when running Intel Burn Test, once my system surpasses 70 degrees Celsius, it starts to throttle back its multiplier from 9x to 6x. This isn't SpeedStep or C1E kicking in, as both features only apply when the CPU is idle. To be sure though, I tried disabling them both and my multiplier still lowered itself as soon as I reached 70ºC.

However, when I disable the CPU TM function, my multiplier doesn't downclock anymore, allowing me to complete my IBT run with max temps of about 73 degrees.

It appears to me that my Prochot# sensor trips at 70 degrees Celsius, which I think is low considering Tjmax for a G0 Q6600 is 95 degrees if I'm not mistaken. 71 degrees is Tcasemax, but Prochot# should trigger at Tjmax and not Tcasemax.

Is there a way to correct this without disabling TM function in the BIOS?

Hello,

I myself also had a Q6600 @ 3.4Ghz, And i know from back in the days, these chips arent the best in handling high tempratures. When you pass 70c there is a high chance it gets unstable of the temp.

If i where you, id just keep it under 70c all times, for the sake of the chip itself

TM function shouldn't rely on Prochot, and I do not think there is a way to trigger Prochot at below the tjmax.

Run something like RealTemp while you test, it should display the prochot status.

I don't think so. I had to disable TM on my Asus board even though under stress I just about reached 70c.

REALTEMP: always said that Prochot was OK

Yep, I've tested with RealTemp on. It does throttle back even if RealTemp says Prochot isn't triggered.

So does that mean that if I turn off TM function, Prochot will still kick in, should I reach 95 degrees?

Tjmax for Q6600 G0 is 100 C

but you are hitting very high temp you need to set it up a little bit slower or use other cooling solution

Those are my IBT temps set at maximum. The highest I get with Prime is 67 degrees. Gaming temps are in the high 50s.

if you correct the Tjmax you will see that your temp are 5 C higher than what you are seeing now. And i think you should disable the TM in the Bios when your temp's are ok.
and you can check this link for good info http://www.overclock.net/intel-cpus/...p-prochot.html

Yeah, PROCHOT isn't the issue. It would not be tripped so low.

Must be some other energy saving feature, thermal throttle, or TDP limit that the board is responsible for.
