$500-550 gaming build

Hey guys (and gals), I haven't posted on these forums in a while... but a friend of mine had asked me what type of gaming rig he could build for around $500.

Basically, he is looking to play Starcraft 2 on Ultra settings, and being able to play every game out there with decent graphics/good fps.

I did throw together a rig myself on newegg, but have been out of the loop for awhile, so just want to hear what overclock.net's expertise has to say.

Xigmatek Utgard Mesh CPC-T90DB-U03 Black Steel / Aluminum and Mesh Bezel Computer Case - $59.99

ASRock M3A770DE AM3 AMD 770 ATX AMD Motherboard - $59.99

HIS Radeon 6770 1gb 128-bit GDDR5 - $124.99

Rosewill HIVE Series HIVE-650 650W Continuous @40°C, 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified, Modular Design
- $79.99 (I may or may not have gone overboard with the power supply)

AMD Athlon II X3 455 Rana 3.3GHz Socket AM3 95W Triple-Core Desktop Processor - $79.99

ADATA XPG Gaming Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory
- $29.99

Western Digital Caviar Green WD10EARS 1TB 5400 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive - $64.99

LG DVD Burner Black SATA Model GH24NS70 - $18.99

= $518.92

Hmmm, I think you don't want a 5400rpm drive as your primary HDD. This would be a better choice:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822148697

I would have to look but I think you can probably get a better videocard for $125 as well.

I would recommend this motherboard:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813186168
It's cheaper and supports 8x/8x crossfire instead of 16x/4x.

I didn't even realize I had picked a 5400rpm hard drive, I just kind of threw this together really fast. Thanks for pointing that out.

And although that mobo may be cheaper, the one I picked supports a faster DDR3 and can hold up to 16gb. He may upgrade sometime in the future, so I want to futureproof this as much as possible.

Gotcha. And I'm actually not seeing a much better Videocard option at the $125 price point, there are several cheaper 6770's.

Cheaper 6770's:

or

Amazon has a 6790 for $130...

I like the case you picked, it's very stylish for that price.

I was looking on newegg and was able to find a XFX HD 6790 1gb 256 bit for only $110 after mail in rebate so i'm going to go with that one. Plus, it comes with Dirt 3... scooooooore

And also, yeah. I didn't want to go to cheap on the case, I still wanted to keep it stylish even though it is a budget build

Okay, so here is the upgraded rig so far based on feedback. It actually comes out cheaper than the previous build, so I'm happy. And i'm sure my friend will be pretty ecstatic on what i've been able to put together. Tell me what you guys think!

XFX HD 6790 1GB 256-bit

Western Digital Caviar Blue 500GB 7200rpm

ASUS 24x DVD Burner

Xigmatek Utgard Computer Case

M3A770DE AM3 AMD 770 ATX AMD Motherboard

Rosewill 650W Modular PSU

AMD Athlon II X3 455 Rana 3.3 GHZ

ADATA 4GB DDR3 1600

Comes out to $508.92, not including S&H. Not to shabby.
