Instability: About to light this PC on fire!

Thread Starter
One of my AMD rigs has me extremely fed up.

It's been MONTHS and it will randomly just freeze on me. I could be browsing the internet, listening to music, and out of nowhere it will just hand. Funny thing is, it will run stress tests fine, temps low, no errors, and all of a sudden it just freezes.

Everything is manually set to stock settings in the BIOS - No overclocking at all. I had RMA'd the ram last week, as one stick was defective, but it's freezing up on me yet again. Memtest passes for hours with no issues, but after only about 5 minutes of using Windows it might freeze up again.

I've tried both an X3 710 and an X2 3600+, both with the same issue.

Here are the only things I can think of that could be causing this:

1. Windows Install - If parts of the OS have gotten corrupted somehow, could they cause my system to randomly hang on me? I would honestly like to leave the clean format as a last resort.

2. Motherboard - This DFI Lanparty DK 790GX has been pretty finicky in the past, but could it seriously be causing this sort of unexplained hangups? I do know my NB heatsink gets HOT.

3. Power Supply
- The 550W Antec True Power Trio I'm using with this system is supposed to be a quality unit, although sporadic voltage spikes would account for the random freezing. Is there a way to monitor these fluctuations without a multimeter?

Aside from that, I'm all out of options. Any thoughts before I light the rig on fire??

Edit: Btw, specs are:

AMD X3 710, DFI LanParty DK 790GX-M2RS, Onboard Video, 4GB DDR2 OCZ SLI, 550W Antec TP Trio, 640GB WD AAKS

Assuming the rig is not OCed, Windows seems to be the most likely suspect. It could also be a bad sector on the hdd. I have never heard of a motherboard causing random freeze ups. AS for the PSU, if it only froze under heavy load either cpu or gpu I would be inclined to think it is the psu, but seeing as it is purely random i doubt the PSU is to blame. if you are still unsure about it you can measure the voltage with a multimeter by the yellow and black wires on a 4 pin molex connector for the 12v rail for the 5v rail measure across the red and black wires of the molex connector.

Could easily be the motherboard, especially after swapping CPUs saw the same issues. But I would also suggest running a bone stock Windows install with only windows updates and see if it exhibits the same behavior. I just recently solved an annoying freeze up problem by updating audio drivers.

AIDA is fairly effective for monitoring voltages, but if you had a bad stick I would go with the damaged OS theory and work from there.
