The MSI X79A-GD65 8D is a socket LGA2011 HEDT (high-end desktop) platform offering by MSI, based on the Intel X79 chipset. The landscape photograph shows just how the board is bursting with features. The LOTES-made LGA2011 socket is powered by what appears to be a 5+2 phase VRM configuration, which makes use of solid-state choles and POSCAP capacitors. DIMM slots are arranged in two sets of four slots, on either sides of the socket. Each of the two sets has wiring for two of the four DDR3 memory channels of the Sandy Bridge-E processor. The memory is powered by a 4-phase VRM.
There is also the normal gd65 with 4 dim slots.

he board supports 4-way SLI and CrossFireX, and quite a few overclocking options packed into the UEFI configuration utility. There are MSI exclusives such as OC Genie II.
I dont think thats true, quad sli/xfire and 3way sli/xfire is supported. Expansions doesnt allow for 4 way cards anyway, and under optimus prime's heatsink, i dont think msi crammed 2x nf200s.
Does anyone know if we still need nf200 for 3way and 2 of them for 4 way sli? Cpu lanes are more than enough to accommodate without added latency.

I didn't think for enthusiast sockets you ever needed nf200 for 3way sli. But I believe you still need 2 x nf200s for true quad sli approval by nvidia (because they're stupid like that). And no way in hell is that board doing 4way unless its by watercooling single slot cards. Tri sure, quad nope. They didn't space the lanes out as such as you said. Funny.

Now, just to convince the bosses to replace my work computer with one of these, at least 16 GB RAM, and a hexacore SB-E!

So now that 8 GB DDR3 modules are available you could load this up with 64 GB RAM! Any word on whether the consumer SB-E processors will support ECC RAM?

MSI had black boards for awhile on the higher end boards.

Yes, they should as many are meant for server grade processes, but I can't confirm. Haven't 8GB ECC modules been around for awhile though?

Registered ECC modules have gone up to 8 GB for a while now though they've been really expensive. Normal ECC DDR3 costs maybe twice as much as non-ECC DDR3, which isn't that bad considering DDR3 prices these days.

So what's the deal with PCI-E 3.0? there's no Gen 3 branding on the board yet they're saying it supports 3.0.

Also wonder about something VR-Zone said

Is there actually a higher end board MSI is releasing or is VR zone confused?
