The fact that it is a satellite and 32000km away from the heart of the US has little to do with the latency you get from satellite service. Were talking 10.7ms of latency in a vacuum however, due to the fact that it has to travel through our atmosphere and through a series of pieces of equipment on both the satellite and the earthstation, you are going to always see 300+ latency. I use military satellites on a regular basis and had my own dedicated 9Mbps connection to the "interwebz" and despite the 0 packet loss which you NEVER get on a land line, there is always the latency.

I'd be interrested to see what kind of modulation this employs as there is limited space in the frequency spectrum. Data rate is directly related to how much "space" you need of the available frequency spectrum.

Update Wildblue is going to provide the service through ViaSAT.

Before college, my Internet was through Wildblue, and 1500ms ping was normal. However, along the lines of Exidous comment about military satellite, the one thing I noticed over the past few years is that file downloads were never corrupt. I can't say that about my college's Internet; MD5 checksums fail every once in a while.

Erm.... hate to nitpick, but tell that to my fiber line.

Ususally that is due to forward error correction 1/1 (every bad bit is resent)that requests the information again. It uses the "extra" badwidth that fiber can afford to resend the information.

From ViaSAT's site. "Once on station, the ViaSat-1 high-capacity Ka-band spot beam satellite will include coverage over North America and Hawaii, enabling a variety of new, high-speed broadband services for WildBlue in the U.S. and Xplornet through Telesat in Canada."

I cannot wait to drop Oceanic Time Warner Cable...

would be great until you play a online game and have 2 sec lag with the slow upload.
