Sound card will only improve the quality of the sounds(louder and clearer footsteps, etc.)

that's weird because i got my soundbaster X-fi Titanium HD today and SC2 seems to run way smoother including the sound.

Having a soundcard offloads work from your CPU but I think almost if not all CPUs could handle it.

with that CPU you got , i dont think so.

but reliving the CPU from dealing with the sound might give smother performance , one of the reasons is Windows showing awful results handling multi-tasking in general

so you can say that a Sound card might get thing to run smoother

There may have been a difference years ago with old computers but now I seriously doubt anyone could tell. I mean you've got a quad clocked at 4.3ghz, I'd be shocked if you noticed a performance improvement.
